Racial justice in the context of the United Church is defined as striving for right relations with each other. In order to achieve right relations we need to examine power and address how it has been enacted in those relationships. We acknowledge that racism is still present in society and the church, and that racism impacts us all. We also know that racism is more than personal attitudes; it is embedded in systems and colonial ideologies. Since racism is invisible mostly for the ones who are not harmed by it, we need to tell the stories that make visible what is invisible. We need to uncover it, name it, and seek ways to undo it together.

Beyond Diversity: Courageous Conversations about Race will further the commitment declared in our Anti-Racism Policy “That All May Be One,” and deepen and continue the conversations started with the Anti-racism training for all ministry personnel. As we address race and racial identity, this seminar will provide the tools to create a safe space and to engage, to sustain and to deepen these conversations.
