The United Church of Canada seeks to be a reflection of God’s world, which includes all God’s people, and that helps make it a great place to call home. We hope that all will feel welcome to create together communities of genuine belonging. Hear the story of some who now well and truly call the United Church home, and in so doing, invite the wider church to marvel at the many gifts of the Spirit.

 

Uganda Martyrs United Church began in 1992 as a mission unit of the United Church, financially assisted by mission and service funds. When Uganda Martyrs became a formal United Church congregation in 2011, about 80 members of the mission celebrated by becoming church members in one fell swoop. The congregation shares space with Riverside-Emery United Church in Toronto, Ontario.

 

About 70 to 80 youth and children attend Sunday school at Uganda Martyrs. The church is working toward self-reliance and raises about $50,000 per year.

 

The Ugandan community has no “camping” tradition, so it was a special event when 18 youth went to Sparrow Lake Camp last summer to experience this Canadian custom.

 

The Ugandan Martyrs United Church represents an exciting new chapter in the United Church’s denominational history. How empowering and uplifting it is to see transformational change as a result of our mission and service commitment to journeying together!
