Minutes for Mission - September 22: Lockdowns

The Bible asks us to support prisoners, but they are not the only ones affected by incarceration. Listen now to how one of our partners in Nova Scotia provides support to family members visiting prisoners.

Lockdown—that’s what they call it when a prison goes into heightened security mode. Those incarcerated in the prison are kept in their cells, and entry to the prison is reduced to essential personnel. Lockdowns can happen for any number of reasons, at any time.

So how do you react when you have scraped and sacrificed to come up with the money to travel to the institution to visit your partner only to be turned down at the gate? What happens when the child you brought cannot visit a parent? Where will you go and what will you do until the next bus comes?

When this occurs to families visiting the federal prison in Springhill, Nova Scotia, the visiting family has a refuge at Spring House. For over 25 years Spring House has provided not only safe and affordable accommodations for visiting families, but also hospitality. We are here when visits happen, and we are here for families offering an ear and support when they do not.

A few years ago the federal government withdrew funding for hospitality houses like Spring House and some have had to shut down. Spring House, thanks to concerned citizens and churches—and to the Mission and Service Fund—has been able to continue its mission.

Every gift to the church’s mission and service is used wisely and helps transform lives. Please continue to give generously - visit the Mission and Service donation page.
