Minutes for Mission - September 8: Healing Hurting Lives

United Church Mission and Service supports 73 community ministries across the country that are making a difference in the lives of Canadians every day. Hear a story of one of these ministries.

Limberlost is the only community Emma Barsou has known. In 1998, her family fled southern Sudan and came to live in this public housing complex in northwest London, Ontario. She was five years old and grew up in the community, where she now volunteers.

Carol Wainwright came to Limberlost more than three years ago after leaving an abusive relationship. She has struggled with an addiction. Like Emma, she also loves her Limberlost community.

Many faith communities, organizations, and individuals have joined the ecumenical work and vision of the Limberlost Chaplaincy, where the goal is to create a positive community environment by offering resources and opportunities for individuals and families.

“There’s a real desire in the community for betterment,” said chaplain Susan Boddaert. “I think [the centre] means a groundedness for them. There’s so much change in the world that the only constant seems to be change. They know where they can go and be sure of a welcome, and an acceptance, and a helping hand.”

The chaplaincy receives funding from the United Church and other denominations. Limberlost provides a Christian presence to 160 families in the housing complex. With cuts to social programs, the level of hardship at Limberlost housing complex has increased. The need for a caring chaplain to comfort those grieving, depressed, or struggling to adjust to a new life in Canada has never been greater!
