My Proposal related to the Middle East for the 40th General Council

Folks in the United Church of Canada,

It is very laudable to desire and support peace.
No country in the world wants peace more that Israel, who has been forced into at least 6 wars (1947, 1956, 1967, 1973, 2006, 2009) in the last 60 odd years, with never-ending terrorism to fill the brief periods in between.

Israel will always be the first to compromise for peace.
The Palestinians, however, categorically refuse to accept Israel's right to exist. Instead they teach their children the 'virtues' of murder and suicide.

Israel even attempted unilateral compromise by leaving Gaza completely in 2005. This acheived the election of Hamas and proved that to date Palestinians are most interested in afflicting Israel with almost daily barrages and little interested in proper self government.

So yes, working for peace is most laudable and must start with the proper education. One that imbues its people with a desire and a willingness to LIVE in peace and not simply DIE for the sake of murder and 'holy' infamy.

Let the UCC resolve to help to educate the opposing parties in the meaning and the dynamics of peace. It is a long term and, G-d willing, acheivable goal.

Respectfully,
Phil Nussbaum
