Is saving lives hurting lives?

I've heard much of the issues of the future and current population rates, and I've also heard of several charities and nonprofits attempting to feed, clothe and educate these people so as to help them. Many of these people have no way to escape these conditions though, and so I find myself asking if we are truly helping. In the wild, overpopulation often has a way of evening itself out as resources become less readily available to all members of the species. Humans, however, try their hardest to defy such limitaions and provide resources to those who would normally not get them. While helping an individual will certainly be beneficial to that individual, it will hurt the whole by refusing to let nature do it's part and not offering a viable alternative. We insist on continually increasing the population to unreasonable numbers, and insted of helping a group for the long term we give them a small amount of help in the short term and amplify their suffering later on.

Modern technology has certainly let us expand the numbers of humans we can have in a given space (through marvles such as skyscrapers and such), but we can't keep expanding like we are in India without a drastically lowered quality of life and certainly a lot of pain, suffering, and ulimately death.
