Could Canadian Churches Use Geothermal Heating and Cooling?

There has been a lot of talk in the City of Toronto about the Parkdale United - Green Phoenix Project which began construction in August, 2006 and I believe is still working to 100% complete a green renovation. As I also understand it, the church has installed large solar panels up the side of their apartment building on King St West in Toronto.  You can read a little more about it and their conference on Green Churches in Canada here

PUCF, church in Toronto, green spiritual spaceParkdale United Church Foundation (PUCF) is a charitable non-profit organization that was formed in the early 1970s and has helped hundreds or even perhaps thousands of new Canadians and elderly people live by providing clean and affordable housing. The organization is rennovating its buildings in effort to become a green community model. In addition to solar power, they hope to add eleven new units to an existing apartment tower, and also expand community space, in part by converting an old mansion called 'Shalom House' .

My friend is consulting with some engineers and businessmen associated with another spiritual organization in Cambridge Ontario that's studied the PUCF project to learn lessons. He would like to put together a discount service to green churches all across Canada.

Some green technology fits nicely into modern religion, and some doesnt.

I think it would be quite acceptable to have solar panels on the roof of the building, charging batteries in the basement for heating and cooling and electric grass cutting and hedge clipping etc the groundskeeping of the property outside.

But its my opinion that certain medieval notions might prevent modern churches from readily adopting geothermal technology for heating and cooling.

What do you think?
