Retro Future Religion

Anyone who uses Twitter and follows friends who are artists is probably aware of how big the hashtag #retrofuture has become... And it seems to be getting more and more popular online everyday.  But I'm obsessed with something else inside this art movement that I find even more interesting... Retro Future Religion.

alien technology, priests, future religion,

Retro Future is an adjective used to describe the art of the past's vision of the future.

Retro Future Art celebrates highly stylized imaginings over accurate predictions.  Hollywood movies like the 1951 classic They Came From Outer Space would indeed be considered Retro Future, although probably the most pedestrian examples of what are in fact so many brilliant examples found on Twiiter these days , or by doing a Google Image Search for Retro Future Art. See here,

Retro Future Art

Retro Future is one of the most popular trends in art galleries and is reflected in many of the works for sale in Canada's biggest cities too. There is a Retro Future Art Show at Hashtag Gallery in Toronto on July 3rd 2014 sponsored by an advertising agency that supports local artists and buys their artwork.  Their offices are located in a historic section of the city and they have smartly styled their interiors to reflect the naivety of 1950s and 60s toward Science Fiction subjects and what they perceived to be future technology. This creates a lovely paradigm for their own creative initiatives.

Retro Future Religion

This author finds himself drawn to Retro Future Religion, and the idea of an evolved worship - I seek out the art and  artists of the past that tried to envision the future of religion.

In the photo at the top of this article aliens are interacting with Greek Orthodox priests. One can only speculate what religion these strange looking armour plated aliens could be seeking with such devotions. That tickles my consciousness and gives me hours of interesting thoughts. ..

The very idea of a future religion seems somewhat paradoxical, as scholars and priests are always connected to ancient texts.  So perhaps a good place to start thinking about the high technology future of religion is to consider the ancient past?

Mohenjo Daro (Mound of the Dead) and Harappa have been discovered in the Indus Valley of modern-day Pakistan. Today we know that Harappa is a very ancient civilization, pre-dating dynastic Egypt. Amnong the ruins has been found an idol which is called the Warrior King

Found in 1927, the soapstone shows a seated male figure and was found in a building with unusually ornamental brickwork and a wall-niche. Though there's no evidence beyond this artifact to suggest that priests or monarchs ruled Mohenjo-daro, archeologists dubbed this dignified figure the "Priest-King." Could he be an alien?

Hunger Games movies envision a dystopian future (where there is no religion or any morality) and there we find Katness costumesa and appearance referencing Cleopatra.. Top fashion stylists love the movie and write on how they are reminded of Vogue-in-the '60s/'70s because of eye makeup that's very 'Penelope Tree'.

And is Dr Who a Retro Future Angel ?  The subject of religion in Dr Who could be discussed for hours - its fascinating.

Retro Future Art is Selling!

Let's face it, the trendy 'retro future art movement' is growing more popular because the art is selling.  The art is selling because the idea of a Retro Future pleases us; it ttickles our sub consciousness and gratifies our sense of progress and indeed celebrates the advance of man.
