Minute for Mission: March 24 - Thirsty for Spiritual Nurture

Your mission and service gifts support new ministries and ministry innovations to help make our gospel of hope accessible to more people across the country. For some churches, making worship itself accessible is the first step.

Some people watch church services on television. Others enjoy the video screens in their church sanctuaries. And then there are the congregations that have combined “television” and video screens so that they can share worship via video-conferencing! The members of Trinity United Church in Thunder Bay, Ontario, received a New Ministries Formation Fund grant in 2011 to help develop web-video capacity so that they could go live during worship.

Trinity has connected on Sunday mornings with Pinegrove United Church in Rosslyn, Ontario, and Grace United Church in Nipigon, Ontario, neither of which has order of ministry staff. A student or layperson in each satellite site helps lead worship with the Rev. Randy Boyd at Trinity. Each church has a large screen, a video projector, and a web-video conferencing unit. Members at the various points lead different parts of the worship service and appear on screen in all three locations. Choir anthems, prayers, and sermons are also jointly done.

New ministry projects like this are supported, their stories are shared, and learning from them is engaged through your mission and service dollars at work through church initiatives such as EDGE: A Network for Ministry Development (www.edge-ucc.ca). Projects like this offer new hope for congregations and ministries across the church seeking to do vital ministry in a new way for a new day!

Every gift to the church’s mission and service is used wisely and helps transform lives. Please continue to give generously.
