Weddings

Hey, does anyone out there know if it's true that you can get a one-day permission to marry someone if you fill out the proper forms?  I'm not even remotely ordained (yet) but I have a friend who wants me to marry them next summer here in BC.  Is that even possible?

Check with the bc agency that gives permision - check the web and also with bc conference - each prov has their own rules.

BC sucks.  They don't do it for civil ceremonies.  However, I'd like to check with the conference as it could be seen in the same sort of light as the laity administering sacraments under the doctrine of the priesthood of believers.  I would still need to have permission and authority from conference, but really, is it that different from a lay person administering baptism or communion under the guidance and permission of an ordained body?

Baptism and communion are different because they are not legal functions. Anyone can baptise or bury, only someone authorised by Conference can preside at communion.

In the case of weddings, clergy perform ceremonies on behalf of the state. You do the legal work, and sign the legal forms. Marriages generally can only be performed by a licensed minister (and that licence is obtained *through* BC Conference), marriage commissioners, or justices of the peace. BC Conference will request the province to issue a one-time only licence to a minister, JP or marriage commissioner.

You would likely not be able to do the wedding. I've done a wedding in BC, but I was already ordained. Your first line of inquiry would be through the conference,

What your friend *can* do is engage a minister there to do the wedding, and ask if you can assist - but you can't sign the legal documents.

As Fran says all you need is a minister to witness and you can do the rest.
