Living for 120 years?

I was having dinner with my grandparents yesterday when we celebrated my grandpa's 80th birthday. During our conversation, he brought up that in Genesis it says that we are promised to live to be 120 years old. The passage that says this is Genesis 6:3, "And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years." (KJV). I checked out some other translations online and they all basically say the same thing.

How come your Bible is the Word of God?

One of the most common and significant divisions within Christianity I encounter is between those who regard the Bible as literal and those who regard it as a Guided guide that is usually metaphoric.

It seems to me that those who regard it as literal must have either made a decision that it is so, or must have been brought up to believe that.  This to me seems as though people are relating to and putting their Faith in a book rather than in God and Christ.

SuperChristians: More Pious than Jesus

The phenomena of the SuperChristian is, for sure, nothing new. Just read the mid-second century document,

The Marytrdom of Polycarp

. Not only did his entire martyrdom mirror that of his Saviour, he was accused of being an atheist (for not believing in the gods of the Romans), served Christ flawlessly for eighty-six years, and found the persecuting crowd unworthy of his time.

Bible - The Living Word

I have heard the bible referred to as the Living Word.

I looked up the word" living" and the dictionary says ,"having life; being alive;full of life, vigorous, strong; active".

So what that says to me, in my personal opinion, is that the bible is a living document and because of this it changes and its meaning changes as we change. Using parables, as an example, if you read a parable over the course of a year, there will be new things that emerge each time we read it.

Perfecting God's "Perfect" Law?

Every so often I am astonished by how theologically minded individuals can perform radical surgery on the Bible to cop out of adherence to moral depravities. What further amuses me is the blatantly ignorant “there are no Biblical contradictions” statement. Biblical depravity and contradiction always rears its head whenever criticism of the Old Testament is at hand.

The Persecution Complex

Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when [men] shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all kind of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven… You are the light of the world. (Matthew 5:10-14a)

The Double Standard of Christian Skepticism

I applaud many Christians on something that self-proclaimed “freethinkers” often overlook about certain religionists: the quality of their skepticism. I laud the way that a Christian can systematically dismantle their religious rivals, yet at the same time I praise those same rivals in their endeavours to knock down the Christian religion. Christians, as well as other religious adherents, definitely have a healthy dose of skepticism, defined as someone “inclined to question or doubt all accepted opinions” (OED).
