What initially seems like a tongue-in-cheek day of protest, actually is very much needed today. The ability to criticize religion is banned in many countries, and the UN has passed a non-binding resolution to make blasphemy a human rights violation.
I just came across this, and thought it was a good idea:
http://www.facebook.com/blasphemyday?sk=info
From the Facebook page:
[quote]"This crime called blasphemy was invented by priests for the purpose of defending doctrines not able to take care of themselves." - Robert Green Ingersoll
Hahaha, yeah tempted you with that title did I?
Anyways I believe that while I'm a person who tries to be good, helps others and doesn't inflict more pain than necessary and all that. I believe in a higher power who loves me, and after I die and leave this mortal world I'll end up in a place outside of what is currently observable; my atitude here on life determines how I spend my afterlife, in a good place or a bad. Some traditional views of Heaven have people who make it there siinging Gods Praises for the rest of eternity.
When I think of blasphemy, I generally think of "don't take the Lord's name in vain".
In other words, don't swear stating - "Jesus Christ" or "God"
Yet, per wiki, it is Blasphemy is irreverence[1] toward believed holy personages, religious artifacts, customs, and beliefs.
Per Webster's dictionary it is :
BLASPHEMY - abuse of or contempt for God or sacred things
Jesus was even accused of blasphemy in Matthew 9:3 when he claimed to be the Son of God.
So, then, when we watch vids of Jesus and God and laugh; bobbleheaded Jesus, buttons, bumperstickers, signs, when we mock other religion's rituals and traditions ( as they may mock ours), when we dance in the sanctuary , and a million other examples that I could name, is this blasphemy?
What, then, is the punnishment for blasphemy? Or is blasphemy for one not blasphemy for another?
Oh my my my.
Last night I saw an ad for the new "Saw" movie (horror slasher type series of flicks) and they actually opened the ad with
WWJD
And then asked, "What would Jigsaw do?"
Jigsaw being the psychotic killer, of course. Now I'm used to WWJD referring to Jesus, but usually I don't see the acronym "out there" in the wider culture.
