Summer camp gives kids unique skills, experiences

Anyone know the words to "Allouette"? "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean?" "The Happy Wanderer"?

If you do, there is a very good chance you learned them, not from your parents and not in school, but at a children’s or youth camp.

It might have been a day camp. It might have been an overnight camp. It could have been through the Scouting or Guiding Movement. But it was a camp. And what you learned, you didn’t learn from your parents.

The pressure to have kids

So apparently the pressure I've had to have kids is way less than other newlyweds.  It's still there though.  Chemguy and I haven't ruled out kids completely, but at this stage we don't want them and I wouldn't be surprised if we don't ever change our minds on that.

Sheltering your kids from bad news

Maybe this would be better in parenting, but I'm the kid in the situation, so putting it here makes sense to me.

Do you shelter your adult children when a close relative or friend is aging and not doing so well?  My parents (although really my mom's idea) have put off telling me things about grandparents, greatgrandparents, other relatives, friends and even their own health issues for weeks until competitions, exams, whatever are over.

Yesterday I got a panicked call - don't tell X (who is out of the country) about her grandfather.

What were your first favorite songs/bands as a kid?

Reach back into the foggy depths of your memory... remember those first groups... those first songs on the radio that you liked even though mom and dad didn't have the record... back to elementary school days...

Some of the first songs I remember liking of my own accord were:

Joan Jett "I love rock and roll",

Queen "Another one bites the dust"

Billy Squier "Emotions in Motion"

Payolas "Eyes of a Stranger"

Elvis "Jailhouse Rock"

Patrick Hernandez "Born to be Alive"

Making Child-Friendly Spaces

A restaurant in the U.S. has banned children from eating at its establishment. Though I have little problem with this (I would enjoy a night out without a kid in sight personally!) it’s the responses in comments and online forums that I find appalling.

Lectionary, Children and the Life of Jesus

The lectionary for preaching is a discipline that I use.

BUT

I have always thought that children were not in the minds of the folk who put the 3 year lectionary together. We start out with Advent ( expectant waiting) and then move on to the Birth of Jesus, Epiphany and the Baptism of Jesus.

From there we hurry along to Lent and the death of Jesus on the cross.

For children, it seems very confusing - Jesus is born and then died - in a short time span.

Kids, tutors, motivation - ideas?

Does anyone have experience with tutoring or similar school intervention?  I don't know much about Oxford & Sylvan tutoring.  I have a bit of experience with a private tutor, but I'll say that I'm not blown away by it.  What options exist?  What works?  Anyone know of an "ON-switch" for my kid?

Lessons from Puppy class

Our new puppy is 4 months old now and we are in Puppy Kindergarten.

With our first dog, I don't think they did this and our second and third dogs arrived a bit older so this is our first time at puppy class.

There are alot of good lessons here;

happy voices

consistency

treats

work and then play

What have you learned from your dogs that applies to your kids?
