What Do We Believe in the United Church of Canada

I just posted a blog in WC that I posted on our church website yesterday in response to the CBC commentary on advertising by churches.  I believe this may be the same commentary that sparked another thread.  Our webmaster offered his appreciation for my posting of the blog -- found it very helpful for him.

What Do We Believe in the United Church of Canada

CBC Radio included a commentary on advertising campaigns and approaches used by different churches, and included a comment that, as much as most young people support the positions of the United Church of Canada on issues such as homosexuality and the environment, most also perceived the United Church as having no clear beliefs.  This provoked me to reflecting on what I thought could go in a belief statement by the United Church.

What Would Jesus Cut?

This was a question on CNN this morning. "What would Jesus cut if he were in charge of the US budget?" A minister argues that "budgets" are moral issues and as people of faith , it is our opportunity to do the moral thing. Look after the "least of these" and stop pandering to the wealthy.

What do you think? Should polititions exercise their moral stance rather than their political stance. Should they both be the same thing?

Religion, Morality, Humanity

There is a very good conversation going on in P3's thread about the right and the left on the religion continuum.

Do you think that people at each end of the spectrum and all the way down to the people in the middle , have a different take on morality and humanity.

For example, both Fundamentalists at the far right and Progressives at the far left and most religeous along the line would feel the same about " helping neighbours, visiting sick and feeding the hungry." The only place that I think they may differ would be things like abortion rights, capital punishment and same sex marriage

A simple thought

I just coined a new phrase to myself...

I sleep well with a tired back.

(In response to a comment made by a friend, where another friend felt justified to say "on the system".)

Virtue or Kindness?

What's more important, virtue or kindness? Who's better, a pure virtuous person or kind compassionate person?

If one person is very good & pure but occasionally has a mean streak, and another has lots of sex but is really nice, who's the better christian?

I was watching Doubt (Meryl Streep) and the priest said it's possible to kill kindness in the name of virtue. That's the origin of this question. Feel free to define what virtuous, pure or kind mean to you.

What is wrong with sex outside a committed relationship?

I've seen the statement over and over again on this forum that sex outside a committed relationship is wrong.  Not wrong for the person making the statement but wrong altogether, for everyone.  Why?
