A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
Refrain
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.
As I'm sitting at my computer this afternoon, working on a power point presentation for Wed., I was delighted to hear a few spontaneous bars of music from the next room. It's my daughter's former bedroom, and a few of her things are still there. Her little china music box, with the carousel horse - a gift from one of her grandmas, burst into action for a moment this afternoon ... made me smile in the most enchanted way.
Do you have music boxes in your home? Were they gifts? What do you like about them?
This group will be helping co-ordinate a "Spirit Jam" at the More Franchises conference of the United Church in June, 2010. Leave your suggestions here concerning what instrument you play; when a good time(s) to get together during the conference might be; what music we might play; if you have any music you would like to share with the participants; and any logistical concerns.

There is some trouble brewing in a congregation, I know. they have a Sanctuary Choir ( in place before the call to a new minister). They sing mostly Gospel music in their anthems.
The congregation have put this choir, music director and music on a pedestal. They carry lots of clout.
This new minister likes to have the music in the service correspond with the readings and the sermon and the minister is having trouble with the theology of some of the Gospel Music.
Power In The Blood thread has lead me to this place.
Some of you may have heard about the "More Franchises than Tim Horton's" conference that the UCC held in Toronto in June 2008, and that a follow-up conference ("A Second Cup") will be held this June 19-21 in Toronto (http://www.united-church.ca/getinvolved/events/more-franchises-a-second-cup )
How much power does or should the church organist have. "I don't like it " referring to More Voices so she doesn't practice the chosen hymns.
The order of service is organized by the minister. He is challenged about every hymn.
Who has the power - the minister or the organist?
