what our mothers taught us

"In a study published online last month in The Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, we and three colleagues report on an experiment designed to measure what one might call “the nasty effect.”

native peoples and shale gas in New Brunswick

There's a very dangerous situation developing in New Brunswick - made worse by the provincial newspapers and a corrupt government - and by the racism distributed by the federal government. (Have you see the Harper pamphlet on native peoples?)

Native people are opposed to the development of shale gas on environmental and health grounds. Shale gas companies are determined to develop it on native land just like all other land. A leader in this is our provincial robber baron who also owns both the newspapers and the government.

Study Leave

I received 3 weeks study leave. ( I think it was 3) I had designated work to do on this time -or I requested to work on something - for example I worked and wrote a report on Children, young teens, Youth and death and how to cope as a parent or church school teacher. Sometimes I read, sometimes I attended an event but I was always responsible  to M&P and council when I returned.

Recently, I heard of a minister who went to an event but the church never heard anything about it.

Fresh Water from Salt Springs

Hi All,

In the epistle of James we find this bit of instruction:

James 3:11-12 wrote:

Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?  My brothers and sisters can a fig tree bear olives and a grapevine bear figs?  Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Recently there have been several discussions where members of WonderCafe.ca are invited to consider an idea or two and those invited have raised misgivngs about the source responsible for the ideas.

Forgive me for being a nuisance (or don't)

It's early, I know. But this might take some planning and soul-searching.

On Nov. 11, we will all mark the day with pious speeches about how our soldiers volunatrily gave their lives for defend Canadian freedom.

For the moment, let's forget that a lot of them died because military service was the only employment available. I knew many like that when I was a kid. And some joined for the thrill - because they were kids. And some joined to dump their wives and children. I knew a few of th ose.

Anarchy

"Most people, living heedlessly, tanning themselves, engaging in terrorism, or becoming TV slaves, ridicule political chatter and politics. They see that there is nothing to hope for from them. They are also exasperated by bureaucratic structures and administrative bickering. If we denounce such things, we gain the ear of a large public. In a word, the more the power of the state and bureaucracy grows, the more the affirmation of anarchy is necessary as the sole and last defense of the individual, that is, of humanity. Anarchy must regain its pungency and courage.

Active Prayer Life - Cop out or not?

Active Prayer Life  - I have heard this expression used and I wonder what you think it means. 'Active prayer life'? Is that opposed to an "inactive prayer life. Is any prayer life without action beneficial to anyone.

For example: some one you know is sick at home. So which is better - to actively prayer for them or to actively go and visit, get groceries, shovel the walk.?

Are the  words "active prayer life" just a cop out so that people are led to believe you are doing something when in accuality you are doing nothing?

Baptism and our responsibilities

In our baptism ritual with babies and kids, the parents are asked the following five questions:

1) Do you believe in God: Creator, Christ and Spirit?

I do, by the grace of God.

2) Trusting in God, will you turn away from things that harm, and turn toward those that heal: seeking justice and resisting evil?
