If you're going to prank someone...

... at least be credible about it. I got a voicemail from our home phone (we're on an Internet phone system that emails messages) saying it was the school calling and that our son had skipped a class (he just started high school this week). Problems:

a) It sounded like a kid on a cell or VOIP phone

b) the number bore absolutely no resemblance to the school's. Not even the right area code (our area code split two years ago and it was the new one while the school has the old one).

Tutors

Have you used a tutor personally, or for your child?  What did you look for when hiring them?  Did you pick an individual or a company?  How much were you willing to pay?

Have you tutored before?  What did you charge?  How did you advertise?

I'm thinking about maybe getting back into it.  Haven't decided for sure.  Depending on the grade and subject I might need to brush up a bit first myself!  I already have one parent I know that would pay me.

Onwards and Upwards!

Well, your Omni is finally leaving the nest (sort of).

I'm off to Grant MacEwan to join the illustrious ranks of those who don't know what they want to do!  General Studies ho!

So if any wondergatherings happen in Edmonton - or by extension Alberta - during the year, I'm IN!

Onward, the revolution (that is life)!!

As-salaamu alaikum

Grade 7 adjustment?

My son started junior high this year.  New rules, new friends, new way of doing things and more responsibility seem to have overwhelmed him.  We got his report card today and we were all pretty sure that it was going to be bad and it is.  He went from his best report card ever last year to his worst this year.

How to change the world

I really love stories about the power of one. I love stories that involve a person—just an ordinary person—starting out on a journey that seems impossible, even crazy, at the beginning, but then persevering and doing miraculous things. These stories let us know that we can change the world.

Transformative moments

What are the transformative moments in your life? When have you received a lightning flash of insight that changed your point of view, or even the direction of your life?

At the age of seventeen I went to Mexico on a student exchange. When I arrived I spoke no Spanish. My introduction to the language began at breakfast the morning after my arrival. My host held up a fork. “Tenedor,” he said.

Back to school

Well, Somekid starts Jr High tomorrow.  No list so I'm kind of winging it.  They said just a binder and a pen is fine for the first day.  I picked up some other things that I figured he would need.  A math set, some binders, pens and pencils.  I'm a little nervous, but he has good friends and generally gets along pretty well with people, so I think that he'll be okay.

How are you all coping with the kids going back to school?
