New Church!

Update time!

So I started to attend a new church, and regularly. This is the third Sunday in a row I've gone (the previous record was like once in a row).

It's urban, gay affirming, pretty large and uses projector screens for following along. There's a lot of people my age (20-30) in the choir. By my second visit everyone knew my name.

Here's the streetview:

Our Words of Faith- Cherished, Honoured and Living

In 2012 all United Church congregations will be able to vote on an important doctrinal remit. This is interesting for a whole bunch of reasons. It is the first use of the ter "subordinate standard" in our polity in many years. It clearly places the various statements of faith in context of each other, the Basis of Union and, most importantly, scripture.

Why We Hate the Pope

We are angry at the papacy because its pride split Christian unity over 1500 years ago.

If we understand the root of the problem, perhaps there is hope for healing.

The United Church was the first Church in history to unite denominations, instead of splitting them.

Pretty significant.

Have we lost our way?

Ten Bold Predictions - Ideas for the Future

A colleague of ours shared this and I thought it might make a good discussion here on WonderCafe. These 10 bold ideas for the future were presented as part of the Permanent Committee on Finance report to the General Council in Kelowna, August, 2009. They should be taken as a conversation starter, i.e. contributing to the discussion about the future of the church.

1. General Council meets in October in a fixed location for 1.5 days to discuss 20 resolutions

2. We have either conferences or presbyteries but not both

Is the United Church feminist?

I've always assumed that the United Church was basically a feminist. Do you agree?

How are the United Church of Canada and Unitarian Universalists Different?

Title says it all.  I've been pondering this since I joined the site, and was reminded of it again through another person's post in another thread.

Since I've only had minimal experience with both congregations,  I can't really make an informed opinion, but on the outside, I'd say it's ok to drop the name of Jesus here without some vague embarrassment and maybe the radical inclusivity is rooted in the Gospel.

The United Church at 100

If the trends of the past decade (1996-2007) continue unchanged, I wonder what the United Church of Canada will be like at its 100th Anniversary in 2025?

I have graphed what's happened so far, 1925 to 2007 (the latest year for which data is published in our annual Year Books), and then projected ahead to 2025.

Some of the results are startling!

Check here to see the results as a video slide show. www.youtube.com/watch
