Ask the Nominees for Moderator: Week 1

Interested in finding out more about the nominees for Moderator of The United Church of Canada? Each week leading up to General Council in August we are asking the nominees one question to help everyone get to know them a little better.

This week's question: "Last week we celebrated the 87th anniversary of The United Church of Canada. What would you put in a time capsule to be opened by the church in another 87 years?"

Music is very important, both in the life of the individual Christian believer, and in the life of the faith community as a whole. If I was still a member of the United Church, I would put into the time capsule a copy of Voices United.

Rich blessings.

LOL chansen!

Thanks UCC-GCO for posting the thread & link ... interesting to read.  I was however disappointed to learn that RichardBott has withdrawn ... I had not previously realized this.

MC jae.

Thank you chansen. I never knew you liked me so much that you would want to preserve me.

Rich blessings.

You have a different version of "preserve" than I do.

Great idea to ask those guys questions. I looked at the nominee page and the majority of them has only the basic biography information.

If I was a delegate, I would like to know more about what they think and plan to do than what their education is. I hope those questions are going to get more serious.

For example, what would be the one main thing they would like to see accomplished or changed at the end of their moderator time?

Or: What do they see as the future of the UCC?

What would be their focus?

I like this idea - thanks UCC-GCO! I would put in some bulletins from a smattering of congregations across the country - with some info about each of those congregations.

Carolla - Richard only announced that he was withdrawing his candidacy last weekend at BC Conference. He has a young daughter, and the passing of a friend with children reminded him of how precious time is - and he didn't want to be spending so much time away from her and his wife (as he would have to do as moderator). I spoke to him later in the day and he indicated that he might be willing to let his name stand again in a few years. Like you I was disappointed when I heard the news as I think he would make an excellent moderator. It was nice to actually know a couple of the candidates - the first time I have actually known any of the candidates. I guess now, at least, my loyalties don't have to be divided - lol!

Thanks somegal - I'm sure Richard is a wonderful Dad & partner ... as this decision supports.   Time certainly is precious and setting priorities is not always easy.  Congrats to Richard for doing what is right for him at this time.

I'm sure he is too. I have had the opportunity to spend a little bit of time with him, and he strikes me as someone who is lovely to the core.

I like this idea. I will be a commissiner, and need all the information I can get.  I will be looking through their biographies of course. It is a big decision! I was disappointed to hear that Richard had dropped out, and so are others in this area. The reasons for this are very important. Family is far more important.
