I'll vote for it, but I think the 'vulgarity' bit might be a bit overdone. I've been known to drop the f bomb in extreme emotion, and I don't have a huge problem with a bit of colour in language in general; a family background that includes Liverpool bricklayers may have summat to do with this...

I think it comes down to how it's enforced. I'm saying that, like many rule books, it's best kept in your back pocket if you need it, not thrust into everyone's face at the slightest transgression.

Hi BetteTheRed,

As one of the newly minted moderators I read:
Name-calling and otherwise abusive, vulgar or obscene language is not acceptable.
And I think: Name calling is going to happen. Can we minimize it in some way?
Is there a difference between an idiot (for example) and a bleepity-bleep bleeping idiot? Not really. The latter is just more emphatic and the bleepity-bleep bleeping bit probably shocks more than just the individual getting tagged as an idiot.
Idiot is fringe territory, on the foul line which is still considered fair.
Bleepity-bleep bleeping idiot is just enough passed the line to be considered foul.
It can be argued that "idiot" is an abusive term all on its own. The Bleepity-bleep bleeping removes all doubt that abusiveness may or may not be present.
Vulgarity, particularly obscenity is not, I think, automatically abusive. I think context informs a great deal.
Sometimes there is an acceptable use of a well placed expletive. It might offend folk who listen only for certain words. It might also communicate a depth of emotion.
So, if it was simply a matter of two brick-layers having casual conversation I would think it is a ball on the foul line, just a smidge from being foul while still remaining fair.
If it becomes a matter of one brick-layer verbally beating up another brick-layer then the ball is well and truly foul and should be called.
How to call?
Personally and privately should always proceed publicly.
It should never be a moderator's first recourse to publicly shame individuals for occasional lapses in judgment.
Grace and peace to you.
John

Well, I've never flagged anybody before. But my goal will be to get 5 of the council a 3 day ban in the first week. Not that I don't like them - just to show that some people unevenly apply justice. So lets do justice for all for a week? Pretty hard to slip an F bomb. You have to type it and then post it.

Hi...
Dostoyevsky's novel "The Idiot" profoundly influenced my self understanding. I have no quarrel with the word. I will be listening for the tone by which the word is informed.

Are you indicating that all of the five unevenly apply justice?
Are you applying justice evenly?

Vulgarity, like pornography & religion, are personal
where one person's swear word is another's erotic turn on
shaming is 'cultural' -- there are groups of people who agree to follow the same social norms (that's pretty much what 'culture' is) who have a certain group of words & concepts that they consider vulgar, pornography, religious, etc
take a look at the very vulgar words of french canada -- they sound quite bizarre to those outside that culture
or the christians who don't see christians who don't believe in jesus as divine as christians...
and so it goes

As an artist, I want to ask the Council - where do believe nudity ends and pornography begins? Where in your collective mind is the dividing line?

Hi Dcn.Jae,
As an artist, I want to ask the Council - where do believe nudity ends and pornography begins? Where in your collective mind is the dividing line?
I won't presume to speak for the Council.
The answer to the question is never simple and rarely collective. First and foremost it is an individual issue to be wrestled with more than it is a hard and fast rule that must be applied.
Speaking personally, when the image depicted takes me across a line from admiration for form (be it male or female) into primitive emotion (lust or anxiety) a line has been crossed.
And I am never really sure whether it is the depiction that crosses the line or my reaction to the depiction which has crossed the line. I will alway examine myself first simply because I should be controlling my self with greater ability than what anyone else portrays.
That said I would probably avoid the art/pornography debate and focus more on the appropriate/inappropriate debate.
Does the piece fit the context or not.
If not then the piece can be dealt with in ways that are not censorship.
Grace and peace to you.

That's an interesting question. It is quite legal for a woman to walk topless in Ontario, subject to the same "shirts and shoes must be worn" sort of restrictions to which men are subject.
So, are topless pictures okay, or are they pornography?
chansen
Posted on: 06/05/2014 14:58
How about no topless men or women? I'm more worried about topless men, to be honest.
No nipples of the potentially useful or purely decorative varieties, and no genitalia, and we're good. Okay?

Oh yeah don't get me started... Lol! I think there's a difference between a topless photo of a woman suntanning or walking near a beach, and porn. I think there's a difference between a life drawing and porn. If the intent of the nudity is gratutitous sex or exploitation- I guess, that's where I might see it as being porn. If it's someone lettin it all hang out for a life drawing or sculpture- I wouldn't find it inappropriate to post. Like a photo taken at a classic art exhibit? Nothing wrong with that. A photo of a FEMEN protest- while they're in the news. I didn't quite understand how protesting a barbie theme park topless wearing Barbie costumes was less exploitative or offensive than Barbie but it was a real protest event. Read about them first in Huffington Post. What about a post of the link to the news site instead of the photo- with an NSFW warning? And it's just breasts- there's nothing vulgar about that on it's own. There was a nude bike ride here last year- about 100 cyclists rode through downtown in the buff. I would find it okay to post that story with a photo- or a link to it with an NSFW. But I am not a mod. And I would think - just don't be reading if you're in a country with strict laws about it- like Saudi Arabia.

I anticipate that as a mod I will be focused more on context of events relative to the Community Code of Conduct. And it needs to be remembered that mods are not looking for infractions - rather we will be responding to those flagged/reported by the community - which does a pretty good job of dealing with the vast majority of situations already. I hope for a rather light workload - and thank you all!

Thank you everyone for your thoughts on art. The difference seems to be between celebrating the human form vs. exploiting it. Even that involves a judgment call. At any rate, it's not like I'm wanting to post numerous nudes pictures. I was curious.
