I am not going to be popular for this post, but...I am still unsure if I will join. And I have issues around privacy and use of information. We have not read any disclaimer and once your info leaves this site you are giving them permission to use that information in whatever way they determine is legitimate, on the new site. By signing up, or having them sign you up, you have agreed to terms you haven't read yet. Keeping in mind that you are not handing your information over to UCCan staff, you are handing it away from them, and you are not signing up for the church tea social. It is going to a private site with private ownership who are employed elsewhere. I realize this is being done for expediency but I am pretty sure none of the admins regardless of how much they like us, would hand over their information to us to sign up to a website that hasn't gone live without reading what they're signing. So, I think it's better to be prudent until you know what you're signing and what rights everyone there has with your information, even if you get along with all of them. I don't know them all that well- not really at all - chansen the most. I obviously don't get along with all of them either, but that's beside the point, really. I wouldn't let my coworker or casual acquaintance sign me up for something that potentially gives them access to my personal info in ways I don't know about regardless of how much we get along without knowing what powers they have with it. That just makes wise sense.

Kimmio - if you go back and read some of the posts on the "techie" side of WC2 you will find that the new admins have done everything in their power to ensure the new site is safe.

And don't ask for specific posts, I just know I read it and feel secure.

For someone like you who has serious trust issues, expect none of their assurances will matter...just sayin'

Kimmio's picture

Kimmio

No they probably won't- for me, and my personal trust issues that I have brought up. They're huge and unreconcilable. Admittedly- and nobody gets my concern. So be it. Nevertheless, I don't sign up for things online generally without at least the opportunity to read what my rights are, and theirs, first. Admittedly I have skimmed over fine print out of boredom but you probably should read what you're signing up for everywhere. By giving my info away who am I giving it to and what can they do with it. I think it's fair to have a disclaimer posted before giving them permission to sign you up. At least one admin is a savvy business person and I am sure there is no way they would think it's prudent if the shoe were on the other foot. Not even personal, just a business consideration. Called CYA. I won't translate that. I will reiterate that this is not a church tea social, I realize it's easy to get lulled into thinking that way. It would be nice to give blind trust to everyone but quite frankly if you give your info to people with knowledge beyond your ability to understand you should know what they legally and ethically can and can't do with it. Just in case there is any question. It's prudent for both parties, actually. So, admins, put a disclaimer up.

Something wrong with me. I trust the mods and I trust the site. I guess if you are that insecure don't join, what can I say.

Have you ever goodled your name, you are probably everywhere.

It srikes me, Kimmio, that you don't think people here have enough brain cells to discern, from all the information given, that they are indeed, signing on to a safe site.

I'm insulted that you consider me, and by inference, others, to be so obtuse.

You have trust issues, but you don't get to make your issues everybody else's issues.

If you don't trust the new WC2 - don't sign on but leave the rest of us to make up our own minds.  I don't need an alarmist, budding superhero telling me what to do.

I'm beginning to wonder if you are a sockpuppet whose sole purpose is to sabotage the new site, and keep us away from those evil geniuses - pinga, mendalla and chansen.....cool

After all....they make take over our lives.....our DNA.....

I'm not an "alarmist budding superhero." if you feel fine that's your decision. I think it's naive, you are giving info away to people who at this point have far more power than you have- realistically- but, you make your own decisions. Fine. You get along with them and that's enough for you- and that probably is enough for you. You're not me. No need to call me names now just because I am being careful.

Kimmio's picture

Kimmio

Gecko- I am not a sock puppet. I have met Inanna, chemgal, somegal, Richard Bott, jlin, myst, Northwind in person...chemgal and pilgrims have seen my photos, I have spoken to chansen on the phone, I could name drop UCCan names if necessary but I don't want to for privacy. I don't have blind trust. I am genuine my concerns are genuine and I can generally tell when others are too. I have been screwed over enough times not to have blind trust in people. Wish I did. Sorry. Just call me bad luck Charlie. Many times trust has been broken and it's not usually with people just being difficult, argumentative, or goofing off- usually it has been by people with some power and authority or upper hand in my life that have caused me harm. Try to understand why I feel the way I do. If that makes you think I'm a sock puppet that's your issue. Are you a sock puppet?

You have trust issues - I get that.    But simply put, if you don't trust the present admins, don't sign on to WC2 - enough already!

I've participated in enough internet forums to know that I'm not naive.

Nice day out there...going back outside to enjoy the day, and escape this circle of futility.

All registration will require is an email address. No other personal info required. If you're not comfortable handing over your main one, make a new one. Free email accounts are a dime a dozen now. I use fake email accounts for stuff all the time where I need one to sign up for something but don't want it traceable to me.

Though you do point up the fact that we haven't put forward a privacy disclaimer and use of information statement yet. Legally speaking, we likely have to do so. It is not us trying to be sneaky or anything, just an oversight given the amount that we have been trying to do with three people.

Kimmio, you do not have to come over until you feel ready. It will be there when you do and there is certainly no need to pre-register though if you want us to hold the name "Kimmio" for you, we will certainly register it.

Kimmio, I have to admit that I don't get your concern here. Your being asked to give a user name ("Kimmio" or some other unidentifiable name) and an email address. If you're really worried, set up a web-based account on yahoo or google or outlook just for registering for these kinds of sites. You don't have to use your real, personal e-mail.

If you think even that's too much, then don't join the new site. That's your choice.

Oops, Mendalla already posted that! Sorry for the duplication!

Kimmio's picture

Okay. You've made your point about me. I am aware that most people could care less and are comfortable either way. Some people might care though and this is on the Internet not a private invitation to a tea social- so they probably should have some kind of disclaimer up, regardless of my personal issues which are neither here nor there actually- as a protocol- to protect themselves, and UCCan from problems, not just the members signing up. I might have pointed it out but someone else lurking could as easily read it and take issue. So they should put a disclaimer up anyway. I kind of made an inadvertent disclaimer for the time being didn't I? The disclaimer is that you agree to be signed up without a disclaimer first until a disclaimer is posted.

I've been floating around on my southern island wondering how come Canadians elected Stephen Harper to be Prime Minister?

The kerfuffle about voting for admins etc for WC2 is beginning to form a huge clue.....

Perhaps it's my fault that Oz now has Tony Abbott for our Prime Minister?

I should never have joined Wondercafe - let alone consider joining WC2. cheeky

I figured it out CH. I didn't know the difference at first because Aaron is both. Mods are the ones who tell you to stop bickering and behave or start a new thread. They will make a call as to whether someone's breaking the code of conduct. They're the referees and the people who will flag posts (read posts that others have flagged to determine if anything needs to be done- for the admins to do?) and give warnings. They're the social monitors. Admins have technical rights and capabilities and can change settings on your account, go into your account, or delete posts. They are in charge of the technical aspects of securing the site. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone. There may be some cross over between the two but I think that's how it's going to work.

Not badly done yes. We (admins) also do things like create new forums, fix glitches, do software updates. All the boring stuff, IOW.

Kimmio,

if you are so concerned, there is an easy fix for you:

make up an email account.  right now.  there are many free sites.  don't use your real name, don't give them any of your personal information.  make it up.

there is even a plugin for both firefox & chrome called maskme which will make up on the spot fake email addresses that you can use to log on.  that is what i use for a lot of sites that require a log in to post comments (like Slate).

there.  you've got your privacy.

oh, and a big hello to all our governments & corporations who are spying on us right now :3

and if you are concerned aboot your words giving away personal information to people you don't want to, well, guess what? ever since you posted on WC (which is viewable to the public -- and without any disclaimer aboot such)...anyone can read the site and your words.  and figure out things like your age group, your native language, your sex, your gender, your social class, where you live, what you like, dislike, etc etc.  just by reading your words.  and since it is on the internet, it is there forever :3

Yes, I know that. It's all very Orwellian. Gotta love you though Inanna. What I think is turning this world into a dystopian nightmare you greet with optimism. You're very adaptable. :)
