Unicef's Ad Campaigns Against Outdoor Poop in India...Yes!

This is surely a topic that may not SMELL  very nice. I expect even less responses here than 2 or 3 except for the lurkers. I must say its  something most of us aren't inclined to think or worry about . I received it in an email, somebody was  trying to make my day!

What do you think? To be honest I'm suffering from shock! I can hardly watch the ads. I do hope they work.

  1. Approximately 620 million people in India defecate outdoors every day, according to Unicef.

This dumps an average of 65 million kilos of feces right out into the open where anyone can step on it or, worse, get sick from it.

"If this poo continues to be let loose on us, there will be no escaping the stench of life threatening infections, diseases and epidemics," writes the organization on a website dedicated to combating the problem. "Enough of this sh*t."

So how are officials working to get public poopers inside and on the toilet? With more poo, of course -- poo of the animated, singing and dancing variety.
  2.
  3. Meet "Mr. Poo," the face of Unicef India's "Poo2Loo" campaign.

In an upbeat music video called "Poo Party," Mr. Poo and his friends can be seen dancing in the streets, waving their arms, chasing public poop offenders, clinging to the bottoms of shoes, and singing "take your poo to the loo" repeatedly. At one point, they even enter a disco club.
  4.

Edit:

Sorry, I didn't mean to dump on India alone. Its a country I would love to visit. Who would have thought this was such an enormous worldwide problem?

Quote from the link:

2.6 billion people around the world lack any sanitation whatsoever. More than 200 million tons of human waste goes untreated every year. In the developing world, 90 percent of sewage is discharged directly into lakes, rivers and oceans. And even in developed countries, cities depend on old, rickety sewage systems that are easily overwhelmed by a heavy rain.

Kids Song..."Take the Poo to the Loo...."gross but funny.....:(

Unicef stresses that the problem is not because the people are lazy. The problem exists because  toilets and sewage systems are lacking. Lots of kids can't even attend school because of it.

I was a Unicef volunteer for a number of years. I remember all their ads such as 50 cents will buy this...25 cents will buy that...I heard all about fish ponds and chickens being provided  although I have yet to actually see any of those  in the 3rd. world countries.

Now I've been reading about widespread vaccinations being given  to save children's  lives. Its all well and good except there are  some people who believe  not enough is being done to provide wells bringing clean drinking water. Dirty water causes diseases, polio and deaths.  We can include lack of  toilets and sanitation , its totally horrendous. I'm totally discouraged with Unicef and the UN in general.

When someone has a bowel movement in the outdoors can it not be buried in the sand? Would this not prevent someone from stepping in it?

I thought the ads were kind of cute until I did some google research. I changed my mind in a hurry.

 Waterfall

It can be used for fuel if it is dried and processed properly, and also for fertilizer for fruit and flowers.  In the rural areas they use dried  cow dung for fuel  and human urine for whatever. I'm going to be sick because I read too much already. Don't forget that cows  are roaming the streets too.............:(

There are what is known as dry toilets ( no water used) in some people's houses. The lower caste working  women shovel the feces into a type of open round  bowl they carry on their heads to take it to the garbage dump. Sometimes it rains before they get there, imagine that if you dare.

I don't know about sand, how accessible it is.

Hi stardust,

Better for flowers than fruit.

Human excrement has historically been called "night soil" when used as a fertilizer.

Proper processing is necessary to eliminate disease causing pathogens and heavy metals (elemental types not music types) and the facilities to provide this kind of treatment are minimal in developing nations.

Applying human fecal matter to fruit or other edible vegitation is extremely risky health wise.

Grace and peace to you.

Hi Rev. John

Here's an  article about night soil from Wikipedia. I need to lose about 30 lbs. since my horrendous hernia operations. Perhaps if I keep reading and looking at these videos for too much longer I'll choose not to eat at all....:(

Growing up in the country in N.S. quite a few people had no indoor plumbing in the 40's, the same in Nfld. I presume and up in  northern Canada still  today.

We had an outhouse that was set well back from the house and the well. I recall we had a pee pot in the bedroom  for night time emergency only. We weren't allowed to run and pee on the lawn or the grass.   We never ever had human excrement in the house that I can recall.  I used to be afraid and nervous walking outside in the dark on occasion  but no matter.

As ugly as this topic is maybe  it can teach us to be grateful that we live in this

"Garden of Eden" that we call Canada...........it is the actual name of the country I grew up in N.S.

Next post - Night soil

The use of unprocessed human feces as fertilizer is a risky practice as it may contain disease-causing pathogens. Nevertheless, in developing nations it is widespread.

Common parasitic worminfections, such as ascariasis, in these countries are linked to night soil, because their eggs are in feces.

There have also been cases of disease-carrying tomatoeslettuce, and other vegetablesbeing imported from developing nations into developed nations.[citation needed]

These risks are eliminated by proper composting. "Finished compost should never be 'sterile,' but it should be sanitary. That means the compost should be teeming with beneficial microorganisms that do not pose a threat to human health.

Any human disease organisms that may have been in the original organic material should have been eliminated, weakened, or greatly diminished by the time the compost has become mature."[2]

Human waste may be attractive as fertilizerbecause of the high demand for fertilizer and the relative availability of the material to create night soil. In areas where native soil is of poor quality, the local population may weigh the risk of using night soil.

The safe reduction of human waste into compost is possible. Many municipalities create compost from the sewage system biosolids, but then recommend that it only be used on flower beds, not vegetable gardens. Some claims have been made that this is dangerous or inappropriate without the expensive removal of heavy metals.

The Amish community in Pennsylvania USA uses 19th century farming technology including fertilizing with waste. This occasionally causes problems with government health authorities.[citation needed]

This is a gross topic (had a hard time reading your last post without cringing, stardust)...but important nonetheless because it really is a problem in developing countries. There is an organization called WTO, not the World Trade organization- but the World Tiolet Organization. The first I'd heard of them- because of this thread I went looking for info about this problem...

Here's the story of a beetle that eats poop. Perhaps the UN should breed them and drop them off in India to help out the cause?  God made this beetle.....cheeky...???

Thanks for your input. It amazes me that I have almost 1000 views or lurkers here but very few actual WC  posters or responses. Its always like this on my topics. I post topics for google readers I suppose too. ( If the new WC2  isn't connected to Google and the old WC isn't  fwd. when used after July 1   there's no use for me to post topics that nobody will read... this is off topic)

Quote from the link:

Dung Beetles Dung beetles are professional poop eaters. They roll it up, bury it, or tunnel under it and then eat
it up. Most of the dung they eat comes from large, plant-eating mammals that graze on grass or
eat the leaves of trees and shrubs. Herbivores have to eat larger amounts of food than carnivores,
which means that herbivore dung is larger and more plentiful than carnivore poop.

So without dung beetles and other dung-eating
insects, we would be over run with poop and the
flies that come with poop!

Dung beetles collect dung with their front legs, and
then they shape and roll the dung with their back
legs. The dung beetles even walk home backwards
so they can control the ball with their back legs.

Dung beetles may store their dung balls for months
at a time. And while the outside of the dung ball
dries out, the inside stays nice and moist. When a
dung beetle dies it is actually considered a good thing because its stored dung balls help fertilize
the soil.

(LOL.....funny.... is it true....)

Totally Gross: Civet cats, eat
coffee cherries, poop out coffee
beans, and you guessed it,
those coffee beans are brewed
into a very expensive cup of
coffee at about $50 a cup.

I have a case of verbal diarrhea so I figured I would take a wander over here.... ;)

Yup. I find it kind of funny that the toilet organization calls itself the WTO. With all the technology that exists in this world. All the bright shiney things on the market- some people really don't have a pot to... nor does anyone in their village. It is sad and and unjust, and shouldn't be this way. And we think about how to better ensure that people, especially kids, are fed and clothed and housed and have medicine. But the basic of basic necessities like a toilet are overlooked or too unpleasant to mention. Kudos to the people operating the World Toilet Organization. It's a dirty job, an essential one, that they're not afraid to do.

A special thanks to all those on the side lines, the lurkers who have taken an interest in this story. There have been 1384 views so far, that's a high  record.

Just to think of the childish things ( like how  we behave  on  the internet)  we worry about and bicker about  while there is such serious atrocious sufferings  going on in the world.  I mean there are people with real problems...nuff said.
