Pharmacy Rewards

What are your thoughts on pharmacies offering reward points?

Staring May 1, they won't be allowed to do so anymore.

Or at least not in Alberta.  What are the rules in other provinces?

Shoppers Drug Mart in Ontario has a points programme; I don't get prescriptions, so I don't know if it applies to that, but it does on all other products.

They do here until the end of this month, they don't even require the card it's just on file with the other info.  Safeway gives air miles.

I get Air Miles when I pay for my prescriptions at Lawtons.

At Superstore, they give me ten dollars in Super Store money for every prescription.  Apparently this is for the first 15 so I could earn $150 in free groceries.

At Lawtons, my co-pay is only $2.00 instead of the regular five dollars.

I have no problem getting incentives.

Pharmacy is big business.  And all the chains that have pharmacies are wanting to cash in.  They are vying for our prescriptions, and our dollars.

I think I would prefer overall cheaper medication, and prescribed when necessary, rather than incentives.  But I understand why incentives work, and I understand why people go for the best deal they can get.

Originally, the issue was brought up that some people might not be getting their prescriptions on time or stocking up early because they went for double the points days or similar rewards days.  From what I heard when that first came out in the media, the pharmacists interviewed said that wasn't really happening.  I would be fine if pharmacies couldn't participate in any bonus day.

For the most part, now it just sounds like professionals shouldn't be offering rewards.

I don't really get it.  I liked getting the bonus of rewards, but it didn't affect me at all.  I use different pharmacies, some with no rewards.  If I need something for something acute, I pick it up at the closest one, which often meant the campus bookstore - no rewards there.  A doctor recommended using the one in the office as they specialize in compounding.  It meant coming back instead of dropping it off right away as they hadn't opened yet, but I did it.  One of my medications isn't even available in pharmacies.

As for price, I know they can vary, but with my insurance I've never experienced a difference.

My black market online pharmacy didn't give me any rewards. Not even after the first shipment was confiscated by customs.

Chansen, I forget that was for.  Some off-label use or something, right?

If I could get rewards for my non-pharmacy prescription, I would love that.  It would be like an extra salary.  I'm just glad I don't have to cover it!

Optimum. I'm not in it because I don't shop there much but I think it doesn't apply to scrips. They ask me faithfully every time I do go in, though. Of course, who knows what will happen to it now that the Westons own them. Does Loblaw have a similar program they could merge it with or maybe you'll be able to earn Optimum points at Loblaw and related stores?

i bet the reason why pharmacies offer reward points is to attract and keep customers?

Gotta love some of the red tape when it comes to health issues.

I know why they wouldn't prescribe it. We had to try something. It was low risk.
