This is a very sad and troubling story currently underway in the United States.
http://www.transadvocate.com/what-happens-when-pji-is-confronted-by-parents.htm
Please have a look at this article for content and context.
A young transgender student is charged with harassment and other nasty things by a group that claims to represent other students and parents. It ends up just one...
The Pacific Justice Institute is a very right wing so called faith based quasi legal institute that has the sole function of fighting against LGBT rights and progress.
In this case they have been found out to have completely fabricated the allegations. They have not backed down from the case citing general principles that it is harassment and infringement of the rights of other students to let a "boy" use the girls bathroom.
All fabricated ......
She happens to be a very quiet and shy girl ....
Now the girl is on suicide watch.......
How would "you" as a parent of this transgender girl handle this?
Is there anything we can do to help?
How would a church support such a family in practical ways?
Is there a way to get a message across to the churches that support the Pacific Justice Institute that they are wrong and hurting people to the point of death?
Sorry .... I am quite passionate about this story and family as it strikes close to home. We have trans kids like this in virtually every church.
A study released by Kris Wells of The University of Alberta has put forth an statistic that there may be as many a 6 out of 1000 children that are trans.
This is not a small number ............
Comments please????
Ideas on what to do to help would be so very welcome.....
Sincerely
Rita

I will bump this for you Rita so it shows in the Recents.
You have asked some very good questions. I'm sure people might have some thoughts and idea's or perhaps information that might be of help.

This is so disturbing RitaTG - but thanks for sharing it. Sometimes we need to be shaken.
I don't have answers really to your excellent questions - I will continue to ponder & muse. PJI seems a zealot organization - and zealots are always dangerous, IMO. As I was reading through this ... the thread here in WC on gender neutral restrooms came to mind ... we create these exclusionary zones - why? Could it be argued by zealots that same sex restrooms foster/facilitate homosexual behaviour? That would be a flipside of the coin.
Comments from California school system where gender neutral is the accepted way were quite interesting to me. In my experience (very limited) kids are WAY LESS concerned about such matters than their freaked out parents can be.
I'm at least encouraged to hear the community has rallied - funds have been raised to pay for Jane Doe's medical care. And that care is available & being provided to her. Heartbreakingly sad that it is necessary.

Hi RitaTG,
All fabricated ......
Is this not the end point of a justice system feulled less by justice than anyone parties ability to pay a lawyer?
How would "you" as a parent of this transgender girl handle this?
I'd be keeping a close watch on my daughter.
I'd also be looking for an equally bank-rolled, oppositionally minded group who might be willing to take on the PJI. If I won I would decline a cash settlement in favour of the PJI taking out front page space on all major daily papers and admitting that they fabricated the story and that they are not trustworthy.
I'd be fighting like mad for every right stolen from my daughter.
More than that I'd be looking for some kind of general education program that actually teaches parents (the kids get it from them) how to be more compassionate and decent human beings.
I do very limited advocacy work for parents of children having trouble with schools. One thing I hear repeatedly that drives me mental is teachers and school administrators attempting to justify them telling parents about the number of other parents complaining about how disruptive a Special Needs student is.
Newsflash! Who knows better than that parent how difficult it can be to manage that one child?
If some children can be insufferable asses you rarely find that their parents are reasonable, understanding and supportive themselves.
While some of the details are different some of the dynamics are the same. Remember the recent letter some fine upstanding member of the public sent to the grandmother of a child on the Autism Spectrum of Disorders? There are similar fine upstanding members of the public who look at human sexuality, race and religion with less compassion.
Is there anything we can do to help?
Support the child, oppose those who lie with the truth. Be a better person.
How would a church support such a family in practical ways?
Same as above.
Is there a way to get a message across to the churches that support the Pacific Justice Institute that they are wrong and hurting people to the point of death?
Not unless there was some way you could make all of their children become like Jane Doe in the story.
We like to tell ourselves that the problem is their lack of education (and to a degree that is true). Their hatred stems from something other than pure ignorance and I suspect that for most they have no experience with a family member navigating the same waters or worse, they do and they were taught that violent oppression and opposition was the most appropriate way to deal with the matter.
Sorry .... I am quite passionate about this story and family as it strikes close to home. We have trans kids like this in virtually every church.
Nobody should ever have to feel the need to apologize for being passionate about something. Feeling the need to apologize for what one's particular passion leads them to do (as with PJI in this story) might be entirely appropriate.
As far as I can discern you aren't being unfair or injust so the apology is misplaced.
A study released by Kris Wells of The University of Alberta has put forth an statistic that there may be as many a 6 out of 1000 children that are trans.
This is not a small number ............
Ummmmm. Yes. 6 out of 1000 is a statistically small number.
What it isn't is an insignificant number because every one of those six represents a human life.
Still if what we need is for everyone who thinks like PJI to have to travel this same path as the Doe family 6 out of 1000 indicates it is going to take a long time to get a helpful saturation point of empathetic families.
And hatred of any kind comes with a built in amplifier. Westboro Baptist is how large and look at the mess it makes?
How big does a pond have to be before the tiniest pebble makes no ripple? Regrettably love and support is like fresh water which is easily disturbed and quickly settled whereas hatred is like mud which is not easily disturbed and takes forever to level out.
Ideas on what to do to help would be so very welcome.....
Apart from buckling in for the long haul and looking around for assistance, I have no idea. The foe is an unhealthy mix of hatred and ignorance which is do incredibly dense it believes this is what God and Jesus wants them to be like.
It is the old innocence of the serpent and wisdom of the dove routine. Which for anybody not familiar with the reference is ass backwards.
Grace and peace to you.
John

oh my .... another one
This time in Los Angeles ......
http://www.transadvocate.com/debunked-la-peeping-tom-trans-kids.htm
The Pacific Justice Institute again....
Another child traumatized .......
I grieve for the children and their families.....
What am I going to do ....
Here in my own little corner of the world I am speaking up and trying to help with some awareness.
During the months of September and October our little group has been doing trans awareness training with the Greater Sudbury Police Services. The response has been overwhelming.
Today the two officers that are in charge of liason with the school system were present.
They were moved and asked what we were doing in the schools. Our reply was that we were trying to build up credibility to get an opportunity there. Both officers immediately said that they were going to speak to the school officials and make it happen. One sent a text to an official and within minutes the reply was for the officer to go in and tell them about it.
I am hoping and fully expect we will be invited in. This is a very small step but a step none the less....
Please please please ..... would you my friends talk about this with you family, friends, coworkers etc???
For the sake of the young ones .... I implore you ......
Thank you so very much for considering doing this......
Sincerely and Hugs
Rita

Ugh, not only is this child being harmed by this, but also victims of peeping-tom type incidents.
What's the plan for when you go into the schools?
RitaTG

hello chemgal
When we go into schools we are going to be sharing what it is like to be trans.
We are sharing sobering statistics as well.
We want the kids to see us as persons ..... complex persons just like them.
We have quite a program lined up and we are hoping to increase understanding , awereness, empathy, and compassion.
I will let wondercafe know how this goes when it finally happens.
....at least this is something ..... small ... but something....
Hugs

Sounds like a great program Rita! I could have benefitted from some myth busting about TG people at that age. Hopefully it goes well and you get some great discussion going on!

Rest assured Rita - I am already speaking openly with those I know about transgendered people. As I have stated here in the past, I have off-line friends who are transgendered, so I consider myself an ally. I try to speak up for them when they cannot speak up for themselves - and stand with them when they are able to do so.

update ....
Yesterday I had the privilage of speaking to a small group from Canada World Youth.
I met a mother there that has a friend with a son that they suspect is trans and they did not know what to do....
Seems I am being blessed with the privilage of telling others they are not alone...

Along with the burdens of being a pioneer and an activist comes oportunities to change the world and see how you can relieve or prevent unneeded suffering.
REgarding the girl that started this thread, it just shows me what I have seen since I came out as a teen in 1980. These people who are anti lgbt, always claim that they are protecting children, when in reality it is them who abuse and torture children.

Its totally wonderful what you are able to do. I always remember you and speak up when I have the opportunity. You are first class and certainly helping a lot of people.
The stories are so sad and horrifying.
I wonder if you are aware of the info. I'm posting in the links below.
Quotes:
Germany is soon to be the first European nation to legally recognize a third gender in cases of babies born with ambiguous genitalia. No longer will newborns be rigidly assigned male or female.
The law, designed to fight discrimination, will go into effect Nov. 1, according to Der Spiegel. Parents of children born with both sex characteristics will be allowed to opt out of determining their baby's gender and to wait until later in life.
Or they may never officially declare a gender, leaving the child "undetermined" or "unspecified" on their birth certificates.

Maybe a few from the persecution thread should come over here and take a seat....
Here are examples of serious persecution in our society.

@RitaTG... added to my list.
You know Rita that is an accurate statement. I don't think, or perhaps they are only thinking... that persecution exists only for Christians and their faith.
Any new news on these stories you have shared with us in this thread?

.... just an update......
Please have a look at this article and hear what this "Christian" school board member has to say....
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/25/katherine-svenson-transgender-castration_n_4338209.html
This is an example of the persecution that our young people have to face.
.....
Now on a brighter note ....
Our support group along with 23 youth met with representatives from CAMH yesterday (Centre for Addictions and Mental Health). This is the big Ontario government insititution. The meeting really helped voice the challenges of LGBTQ youth and the lack of effective services. Sadly .... most of the youth were no longer living with their families and most had been persecuted by family for "religious" reasons.
This was a real eye opener...
Thank you for letting me share an update as I continue to work in this part of God's garden.

I don't really think it's an "eye opener" for you, Rita. You've likely seen this for a long time. Atheist gathering places online get a steady stream of kids who claim they're new atheists for this reason, which is actually not a reason to claim to be an atheist at all.
The people these kids should stop believing in, are their parents, not their god. There are other reasons to not believe in their god, but their parents and their ministers deserve the loss of faith and trust here.
