The church’s Moderator, the Right Rev. Gary Paterson, is inviting Canadians to join with him this Friday in offering signs of encouragement to government and First Nations leaders who will be meeting that day.

Because your growling stomache affects this meeting, how?
If you want to have a small impact, call your MP. Write a letter. Fasting is not useful for weight loss, it isn't the proper way to cleanse your system, and it's not recognized as a way to influence meetings between governments and first nations reps. You might as well say you're going to fall down the stairs on the morning of the meeting, and ask people to join you.

More because it will help me strengthen my commitment to do what I can to promote the real issue: a re-drafting of the convenants and treaties between aboriginal and non-aboriginal Canadians in ways that honor justice, mutual respect, compassion and democracy… ways that promote a vision of Canada that puts these values at the centre, not the periphery. You might like to engage with some of this to, Chansen.
Thanks for bumping the thread… that's a nice act of solidarity.
And I have contacted my MP several times about these issues as you suggest, Chansen. I have acted in other ways that contribute, I hope, to a shift … it may take a long time coming but the reality is that it needs to come.

I will fast, presuming that I get organized tomorrow to send out e-mails to Harper, Johnston and my MP.
I don't consider fasting in and of itself an act of support. Documented, I think it can be.

I think it's wonderful that Gary is inviting all the UCCanada to engage in acts of hope and encouragement, and I encourage all you who are UCCanada to accept his call.
RIch blessings.

How will it help you strengthen your commitment Mike?
I'm with Chansen, I don't see how fasting for a day will help. For those who find it motivates them or whatever to get involved, fine, but I won't be joining anyone in a fast.

Mike, I'm sorry if it seemed like I came down hard on you, because I was more going for laughs with the "falling down the stairs" line. The danger with all this sort of thinking is that it appears designed to make one feel good about doing nothing. You should have lead with what you actually did do - that's great, and kudos to you. You've done more than I have, and probably more than 95% of WC.

Mely, isn't there someone with a turban you need to be following?

Chansen: falling down the stairs is more, I think, Stephen's approach: "pushing down" may be closer to the mark.

Sorry if I gave offense. My post was in response to RedHead's unfriendly post directed at you, but which she has now erased.
Having been on the receiving end of many many unfriendly posts I know how it feels.
Sorry for getting involved.

Well… the meeting is under way. The cpmments afterwards will be interesting. Please, god, the government gets some sort of message about the seriousness and absolute need for these issues to be addressed in ways that are rooted in justice, respect and compassion and not just more resource-grapping greed, oppression and ignorance.
