Should President Obama use MLK's bible to be sworn in?

Found this on youtube.  A very interesting topic and a very interesting and passionate speaker that being Dr. Cornel West.

Obama has nothing in common with MLK - nor is he in any sense an inheritor of MLK's life work. the inaugural address was pure Obama - lots of evangelical oratory. meanwhile, corporate profits have risen a hundred and seventy percent in his tenure - and those who have suffered worst as a result have been African Americans.

Meanwhile, as he prays, Obama sends over drones to bomb indiscriminately - and lends support to a war in Mali that has nothing to do with terrorism - but which will certainly make the terrorist movement even stronger.

I'm not sure it makes a difference. Whether a person tells the truth with their hand on one Bible or lies on a stack of Bibles, it doesn't matter which one(s)- they will tell the truth or lie anyway. If it being MLK's Bible will inspire him just a little more to follow through on his promises- that's a good thing. If it's just for show, then it's just for show and it doesn't matter anyway.

I think that using Martin Luther King's bible was a good "showbusiness" decision.

And that is what being President is all about.

The question is "How did they get Martin Luther King's bible in the first place?"

I'm of the opinion that it's more of a symbolic gesture. I'm more interested how many years it will take before we learn for sure that Obama was the first atheist president.

It was, after all, Martin Luther King Day, on the same day that Obama was sworn in.  The keepers of that Bible must have had great respect for Obama in order to release the Bible into his hands.

...it would seem to me that the President shares the dream....

I feel it is rather appropriate especially in light of the speech he gave.

The second term is usually the time a president gets to make his mark.... I look forward to that.

Now ... should chansen be right and the president turns out to be an athiest .... I would say that he is a wonderful ambassador and diplomat and well worth listening to.

I am not motivated by harsh .... I look for the considered presentation.    Yes ... there are those times when abrupt is required but it should not be the norm.

Use of the MLK bible ... even by an athiest ... to me ... speaks to the dream..... and that I fully support...

Regards

Rita

As far as I know Obama professes to be a Christian.  From what I've seen or heard I believe that he believes in love, justice, mercy - values (but not excusively) of one who follows in Jesus' Way.

I really don't think it matters much to anybody but Obama himself what his spiritual relationships are.  I think he is being as good a president as he knows how to be or is able to be considering the restraints of the office.

Chansen - why do you think he might be an atheist?

According to reports, Obama is a membet of Trinity United Church of Christ, in Chicago.

I've read his mother was an atheist, and he was the first president to acknowledge "non-believers", right in his first inaugural address, iirc.

There are 500+ members of Congress in Washington, and only one self-professed atheist, though she prefers not to use that term. What are the odds that, in a country where ~10-20% of adults are non-religious, that 99.8% of this elected body are actually believers? There are going to be dozens of atheists and agnostics in the closet. I don't know, but I suspect Obama is one of them, because of his mom, the fact that he took a chance and acknowledged us, and the fact that he doesn't actually attend church that often.

And if he wasn't a member of a church, he'd never be elected as town dog catcher.

Obama has so far, in just Pakistan and Yemen, killed some 120 children with his drones. He also uses them in Afghanistan  and Somalia. But we don't have a count for them. Nor do we have a count for the adult innocent.

He follows much the same greedy and abusive policies that were followed by Bush. Torture goes on. Guantanamo is still in business. He has taken official power to order assassinations or imprisonment on no charge or trial. His economic policies are as heartless as those of Bush. The situation of Blacks and other minorities under Obama has not improved in the slightest. Indeed, their poverty is worse.

I'm glad he claps hands for Jesus. But I can't think that make him a Christian.

President Obama using Reverend King's Bible was a nice symbolic act.

If Pres. Obama actually takes to heart and practices the ideals of Rev. King, he will become an excellent American president.

In 2012 my wife, stepson #1 and his then-girlfriend, and I visited the MLK Memorial in Washington, D.C. What a wonderful tribute that Memorial is. I encourage everyone who can to go.

Rich blessings.
