... or are we the Polar Bear?
Conservative Senator Nicole Eaton thinks we should get rid of the "dentally defective" beaver -- a "19th century has-been" and chose the "strength, courage, resourcefulnes and dignity" in favour of our current lowly national symbol, the beaver.

This is the ctv version in case anyone thinks it's a leftie plot to ridicule someone who draws a salary of about $250000 a year to come up with this stuff.

IMO Polar Bear = carnivore
Beaver = builder
The political metaphors are endless....

If anyone knows how to imbed the vid so it opens in another window, it would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. I thought the bear was an endangered species that sleeps a lot and occasionaly tears a tourist to pieces.
I like racoons: opportunistic, strong, inquisitive; they urbanise quite well considering, and they're seriously into garbage.

How "conservative" can he be if he wants to change this old tradition?

You have a point there. Maybe she's a "Reform" conservative? (Today, the National Anthem - tomorrow? The Beaver!)
Say it ain't so.

Ah, choosing an animal on the verge of extinction from our own neglect - how apropos
My favourite quote on our current Canadian iconic image comes from June Callwood...
The beaver, which has come to represent Canada as the eagle does the United States and the lion Britain, is a flat-tailed, slow-witted, toothy rodent known to bite off its own testicles or to stand under its own falling trees.
It is a tie!
Personally I would choose the Moose: an animal that looks like it was created by a committee unable to form a consensus. Equally apropos in my humble Canadian opinion.
Oh look I even found an appropriate iconic image...
