Is this Abuse?

The Toronto Public Library received a request from a library user to remove the Dr. Seuss book, "Hop on Pop" from the library system. The library reviewed the request, and decided to reject it because the children in the book are told not to hop on Pop.

What is your opinion about this?

Does the picture above promote violence to fathers?

How about looking at the whole book rather than one picture? I forget this particular one so I would have to read it through again to see, but judging a book on one picture could be entirely missing the point of the story.

Dr. Seuss books are all great and so funny. Possibly if pop was in pallative care  and my twin boys jumped on him it could be bad. I have not known any kids to act out the Seuss books.

To be fair, I did mention that the Library had decided to reject the request because in the book the hopping children are (eventually) ordered by Pop not to hop on him.

I asked about the specific picture because that was, I believe, the chief source of the request.

i could probably easily find more books in the children's section that would show behaviours that are much more abusive than this.

Hi Dcn.Jae,

Having thought about it at some length I think I will refrain from public commentary on the grounds that I think the author of the complaint is several bricks short of a full load.

Fathers lying on floors near young children are lucky if they only get hopped on.

But clearly as the picture shows it is only about yellow fur-clad  whatever the heck those things are so unless it was a yellow fur-clad whatever initiating the complaint somebody needs to shake the bats out of their belfry.

Grace and peace to you.

I remember reading this book to my children about 45 years ago.  My son laughed and laughed - particularly at this picture.

I guess he could relate to it.

Their Dad would lie down on the chesterfield and both kids would climb on.  I have a picture of them - he is lying on his back with his knees bent up.  Both kids are sitting on his stomach.  They are probably about 2 and 3, give or take a few months.  They referred to this as 'hopping on pop'.

Sometimes he would lie on the floor and they would give him a good going-over.  No violence - no one getting hurt - just a tumble with their Dad.

I think the idea to ban the book is stupid.

My own thought is that the complainant was either just a troublemaker, or else, as John suggested, a few bricks short. As a matter of honesty, I will confess - while my brother and sisters and I never technically hopped on our pop, we certainly in our time crawled over him, sat on him, and lay down on top of him. He never seemed to mind.
