Farley Mowat RIP - An icon is gone

Many many years ago, I read the following books with enthusiasm and enjoyment:

Lost in the Barrens

Curse of the Viking Grave

Owls in the Family

The Dog Who Wouldn't Be

The Black Joke

The Boat Who Wouldn't Float

Never Cry Wolf

And No Birds Sang

And on goes the list. So, it was with a heavy heart that I heard the news today that iconic Canadian author and activist Farley Mowat had died. He has left quite a legacy for those us who remain. 92 years is a good long life for anyone but those of us touch by Farley's writing will miss him all the same.

I, too, was an avid reader of Farley Mowat and will add to that list "People of the Deer" "Sea of Slaughter", "Grey Seas Under" and "A Whale For the Killing".   This book got him in some trouble with some Newfoundlanders.

My favourite was and is "The Boat Who Wouldn't Float".

He will be missed...but his books and his legacy will live on.

RIP, Farley.

I don't remember "The Black Joke".  All the others mentioned are part of my reading list.  I loved Farley Mowat's writing.

As I grew older I found myself disagreeing with him on some points (noteably the Newfoundland seal hunt) but I still liked his books.

I most recently re-read "The Dog Who Wouldn't Be". "Never Cry Wolf" is probably my favourite, but I think I've read almost everything he wrote at least once.

Lovely, approachable, wise man. Canada is much bereft.

Rev, Matt posted a link on Facebook-along the Lines of Farley Mowat is really Dead. His spirit is in Fort Mac-refering to the bear killing a SunCoor oilsands worker.

The last scene in his Never Cry Wolf is the float plane landing to pick him up and to deliver a new researcher. That new man was George Campbell with whom I taught  for many years. He had precious little respect for Mowatt's book other than to admit that he told a good story.

Some of his most compelling wring was in his wartime memoir And No Birds Sang where he described his experience of all consuming paralyzing fear. Sea of Slaughter was also a real eye-opener.
