My music wishlist

I spent some time this week building a wishlist on Puretracks, basically an exercise in "what do I need to buy to build my dream MP3 collection". I ended up (so far) with the following artists. I guess it's kind of my "favorite pop/rock music" list.

Yes (not everything, but a lot)

Jon & Vangelis (the two they have)

Vangelis

Leonard Cohen

The Moody Blues (mostly the sixties-eighties stuff, I wasn't crazy about their albums from the nineties and noughts)

The War of the Worlds (concept album for a musical based on the H. G. Wells novel)

Kate Bush (though they are missing a few early albums)

Some albums of John Williams film music, including the first two Star Wars soundtracks

Chris de Burgh (early stuff, I need to listen to his recent recordings first because I'm not sure where he's at musically these days)

Still need to add Sarah McLachlan's catalogue to the list as well.

Then I can start on classical music (will be very heavy on Beethoven, I can promise you). And jazz. And blues.

Jon & Vangelis: Not interested.

Vangelis: Again, not interested.

Leonard Cohen: Some of his stuff is pretty good. A lot is over-rated.

The Moody Blues: They had a few hits. They're okay.

The War of the Worlds: Interesting.

Kate Bush: Unknown.

John Williams film music: This could be good stuff.

Chris de Burgh: Passable.

Sarah McLachlan: Meh.

Beethoven: Did he ever get his picture on a bubblegum card? How can you say someone is great who never got their picture on a bubblegum card?

Mendalla: Sweet sounds.

Rich blessings.

Mendalla, are you asking to critique your choices, or what our choices would be?

My dad had the War of the Worlds on 8-track with music and story telling. It was great.  The Moody Blues had a terrific song on it called "Forever Autumn". We listened to it as kids.

No real agenda. Just posting something to see if it goes somewhere.

It was Justin Hayward's singing on WotW that got me into the Moody Blues in the first place. Still love that song. However, what really makes the album for me is Richard Burton's narration. Most of it is adapted right from Wells' novel and his reading of it is spellbinding at times.

Great list! I have ALWAYS loved the Moody Blues and would have loved to have seen them in concert. Alas, I must be satisfied with their Public Broadcasting appearances on TV.

I caught them once, but it was the tour after Ray Thomas, their woodwind player, left so it was down to just 3 original members and 3 session players. Good concert and the session players handled the classics music beautifully, but it wasn't quite the same as seeing the actual lineup that I listened to on the albums. I have the Red Rocks concert but its on VHS and I don't have a decent VHS player left in the house and likely won't buy a new one now that we have a PVR and Netflix.

Check out Anugama's "Shamanic Dream", I love to listen to it when I'm stressed.

You can get a sampling online at www.anugama.com

I love everything from the Big Band era right up to today..ummm...excluding rap and head banging metal and club techno.  There is certain artists I love but can't take a whole album of...Sarah McLachlan and Jann Arden are two that get me down after a while.  I am a Christmas carol freak and own maybe 20 CD's but I only play them at Christmas!

Not yet. Just seeing what their catalogue is like in case I do. I have a Blackberry with a 2 GB memory card in it (it uses microSD so I can add more if needed) and not too much on it now that I've dropped a lot of my podcasts (I'm biking instead of doing the treadmill so not listening to them as much). So, thought I finally see about getting some of my favorite artists on MP3, esp. ones that I used to have on cassette or (now that I've lost my CD bag) CD.

Thank g_odness we live in a country where it is still copacetic to d/l/rip music and copy it as many times as we want for free...though that whole digital lock change to copyright law is insane and I hope it gets changed...

and bless you for having a Blackberry --you patriotic Canadian you :3

Puretracks is actually a legal, commercial website where you buy music so not sure if your comments on it apply or not. I'm not a big believer in rampant piracy though I do it occasionally out of impatience with Netflix.

I love the BB but I'm not very optimistic about the company. Having a good product isn't enough anymore and, to be honest, the better Android products are kicking the s**t out of RIM in the quality department, too. My contract isn't up until 2014 so my company (it's a corporate phone) has a couple years to see what happens with RIM and, more importantly, its legendary email infrastructure. If they do what they should and open that up to other platforms, then I may be packing a Droid in a couple years. If BB 10 is as good as it needs to be to save the company, then maybe I'll still be on a BB. My gut feeling is that they split, the handset division stays in business (possibly under new ownership) but switches to either Windows Phone or Android and the infrastructure division either opens up or gets acquired by MS to provide infrastructure for Windows Phone. One thing to keep in mind is that Nokia is also in serious trouble and may get hoovered up by MS at which point buying RIM to get the infrastructure might make sense for MS's new mobile division.

No comment on iPhone because I personally dislike Apple's closed box philosophy. Give me an SD card slot and non-proprietary power/usb connector and then we'll talk.

TBH my wishlist never ever gets shorter, and I buy as much music as possible.  It doesn't help that half the things I want most badly can't be found easily, or that when I go shopping 75% of the albums I buy weren't even on my lists

Speaking of paying for downloads, did you know that Adele's 21 was the only album in 2012 to sell over a million copies? Just goes to show how many are not paying for their listening pleasure.

Lionel Ritchies "Tuskagee" was second, but under a million. His album includes all his best selling songs only this time he is doing them all as a duet with a famous country artist. It marks the return of Shania Twain to the music scene with her and Lionel doing "Endless Love" together. It's done well and I'm glad Lionel coaxed her into doing it even though she was afraid she couldn't sing anymore.

Sounds interesting. I'm not a huge Ritchie fan, but I like that song and Shania strikes me a possibly a better choice for the female voice in it than Diana Ross (who sang it with him originally).

Sigh. Would it really hurt people to drop the $9 or $10 that album probably costs on the major retail download sites? I think purchasing music on physical media like CD is fading much as vinyl and cassette tape did but that doesn't mean we should stop paying for music. OTOH, the heavy-handed tactics the RIAA and record companies have used to fight piracy, not to mention their ongoing attempts to reign in the greater freedom artists enjoy in the download driven world, doesn't help their case. Price the downloads reasonably, ease off on the DRM, and recognize that people posting your music on YouTube helps promote it (a fact that indie bands like Arcade Fire have capitalized on magnificently).

when I used to pay attention to this sort of thing, there were some interesting things that i found out.  one of the justifications that the record conglomerate had for creating the RIAA etc was because of theft...but the funny thing is (those LIARS), music sales had been going down for at least a decade before one d/l music even existed...

The record company's business model obviously, to me, is still broken -- it isn't the 'illegal downloads' that are causing it...

i remember the music industry being freaked out with cassette tapes and radios...

there's less of a reason to even have record labels anymore...and bands have demonstrated it by actually being able to make money with an online presence...

it's gonna be really interesting when the new economy comes online, with a central currency nonexistant and everything somehow resource based...
