Moderator Mardi Tindal: The United Church of Canada repudiates "Doctrine of Discovery"

In today's National Post, Moderator Mardi Tindal writes: The United Church of Canada has repudiated a pernicious bit of history known as the "Doctrine of Discovery." Reconciling historic wrongs takes more than merely saying "that was then, this is now." It takes an ongoing commitment to seeking right relationship.

Other than the fact that the first Europeans to North America brought an 11th Century mindset (Vikings reached Northern Newfoundland around 1000 AD) a very worthwhile article.

Paulette was quoted as saying that the Europeans’ thinking and their religion were based on the premise that Indigenous peoples had to be subdued.

“The Christians’ Doctrine of Discovery was to do exactly that,” Paulette said. “It was to exercise their authority over Indigenous people.”

I agree with Francois Paulette.

is that so?

The involvement of many denominations in the project of assimilation (The Residential Schools story) bears out a cultural expression of Christianity which presumed the problem confronting our First Nations brothers and sisters was that they weren't European enough and they should be forced to become more like us.

And that was happening as late as the 20th Century.

Grace and peace to you.

Then look what Europeans did to the eastern end of the world ...

Crusaded against God's divine people and turned eM against one another ... business against nomad ... mostly a vacant case of soul! Freed emotions are dangerous without cautious thought  about the small support system ...gnomes?

Hoo said thought was dangerous as rational process from d':-3? One has to be abstract as to make real thought appear as just something else ... farse ID intellect?

So the story goes; but hoo believes there is truth sublime there? Pits the orthodox against the unorthodox ... one believing the other is just ouda here ... when the alien sides should be getting IT together! Takes a mean man to pude 'M together as enigma ... mostly dark like John Nash and gammostheory ... conspiracies inflating ignorance ... so the weaker side won't know ...

Guess what? That's th' beta power ... loci follows ... often spelt as Luce ... Eire common pyre well-whetted ... smoldering beneath the superficial issues put forth to blind the insensitive? Backfire ... it reflects as ch'egos ... seen when going ...

Is a wardrobe like a closet full of bones ... scrimshaw? IZeus dideuesee that ... gynes, or Jinns ...

Wow, the Notional Post -- totally awesome for Marti, I'm sure :3

the various monotheisms have a lot to answer for, in following their brutal and rapacious Deity

(and what an invention, bringing together the chaos of humanity that came before and trying to harness it toward order...)

i'm glad that Canada ostensibly is young enough that it isn't oppressed by the sheer weight of the horrors of history that the rest of the world has, what with countries being made by endless series of conquests, of Africans enslaving Africans long  before Christianity, the conquest of mitochondria by multicellular oganisms etc etc etc

Mindfulness, toward a global humanity and a global human ethics

An Eire Eris in story ... of dissonance with ye earth gods ... with myrrh d'eire ... the duncan of birds for removal of feathers ... takes th' ithchii way ... with a good Reuben ... or the souðurn tribe (Numbers 2)! Part of the mnemonic ...

Initiation of total recall? Many wouldn't go there ... couldn't face their past ... well-scrooged soul? Not much left to it after the crap we've been fed ... why history causes hystereases loops in some soles ... choqan thing ... dead antes ...
