Richard Dawkins in Playboy

No centerfold. Promise.

Below is a good interview with Dawkins, right from Playboy, which everyone reads for the articles.

Note that there are NSFW (not safe for work) though strategicaly blocked (technically non-nude) images in the menu and background, and of course, at the Playboy site you're one click away from naked ladies. But the interview is quite good, and worth sharing.

Aaron, I apologize in advance for the flags this will likely receive. Between atheism and evolution and Playboy, this is bound to send the usual suspects into a tizzy. I would looove to read the flags, though I know you won't let me. Just remember that before you delete the thread, wait for a moment to see if it would be a stupid idea or not by using some of the more level-headed members as your barometer, and please don't just react to the lowest common denominator.

I can't believe I just clicked on a Playboy article - lol!

Seriously, I thought it was an interesting article - and the idea of Tooth-Fairy Atheism is what I see in a few people that I know. I've just never heard it explained that way before.

It was a good article-tho the side bar pictures were a bit disconcerting!

Thanks Chansen.

I am kind of disapointed. I was at least looking to see if they would include a nude shot of Dawkins.  He might be a bear under that sweater and I wanted to seelaugh

Alex and ninja beat me to the punchline so I'll spare you the obvious jokes. Playboy has a long history of surprisingly good journalism when it comes to interviews so it doesn't actually surprise me to see this. Hef really does have interests beyond partying and well-endowed women who are a small fraction of his age.  At work now so will read another time.

Goody -- another media narrative for people to Believe in :3

(and as always, Dawkins shows his wonderful dry wit)

Just a side note:

Bless the Hef for bringing such beautiful and positive humanity to such a conservative country as the Ewe Ess Eh (understandably so, the antihuman Fundamentalist Protestantism uprising not so) and then giving this gift to the rest of the world.

Related, I came across this vid (the link takes ewe to the dailymail article; the beautiful vid is embedded down that page) which is quite beautiful -- I love the woman's reaction -- this is what happens when one knows how not to be intimidated by their own BS (belief system)

Good interview.  Thank you Chansen for the link.  I didn't see the nude women you hinted at . (:

Convinced me he doesn't beleive in the same God I don't believe in.  As a science teacher, I continue to be embarassed by the inability of many Creationists to understand the process of evolution and the beauty and wonder of how it works, and how it points to a "Creator" with immense wisdom and patience.  Its principles are unfairly simplified  by the slogan, "Survival of the fittest."    The high percentage of Americans prepared to believe the world was created about 7000 years ago points to a massive failure of the American system of public education.

Sounds like Richard is starting to mellow out in his old age:

Dawkins,"we all have a sense of wonder and reverence at the majesty of the universe"

Dawkins,"whenever something become widespread in a species you have to reckon it has some sort of survival value" (about religion)

Perhaps if we tell him that the afterlife is simply evolution continuing.........

Me too, Jim.  So much of what Dawkins said made sense to me.  Yet I am a Christian.

Quote:  "Einstein ... loved using the word (God) to convey an idea of mystery, which I think all decent scientists do."   As so do a good many Christians, and followers of other religions.

But some I found hard to believe.

Quote:   "the circles I move in tend to be educated, intelligent circles and there aren't any religious people among them."

Is he implying that people like Crossan and Borg, who have devoted their lives to the study of theology, and UCC clegy who spend four years in an undergraduate program, and then another three years doing their doctorate, plus discernment and internships,  are neither educated nor intelligent?

I read that as your fellow tribe member, the tooth fairy agnostic Dawkins, explaining why he had no deeply religious friends.  Nothing more

But if you really want to know, why not write him and see?

Great interview.

An eye opening idea: Belief in an after-life caused 911!

"Some idea of creative intelligence is not quite so rediculous..."
