Well, the time has come, the walrus said..........
Are you an ideas person or a people person?
Thinking back over my time here with Wondercafe, I've come to realise that I'm more of a people person than an ideas person.
The posts I find myself "looking for' are posted by those I've either met or interacted with in "real" life.
(Perhaps it's partly an age thing, I feel more comfortable believing that the posts from those posters I've actully met, are more likely to be genuine.)
My greatest joy here has been meeting up with folks in real life.
I have a lifelong curiosity about people -and discovering a new country and some of it's inhabitants has been a delight.
(Just sorry, that despite many phone calls, I didn't get a chance to meet up with my rival for the roofer's attentions, Crazyheart).
I've been intriqued by the discovery that we all, perhaps without realising it, form a detailed accountof the posters here - even down to their appearance.
Testing your assumptions in real life is an interesting process.
Some are like you imagine, others completely different!
I was raised in the Aussie bush - and my Dad taught at a series of one or two teacher schools, and we lived in the schoolhouse.
The villages were tiny -and you literally knew everyone in a couple of weeks.
One school, at a place called Illabo, was so small that when we drove up to it my Dad said, "This place is really small kids, they won't even have a village idiot - you kids will have to take it in turns."
I was forever on the lookout for the stranger, who would come to the village and bring a new world with them......
Sooo, I'm glad that our Wondercafe villiage hasn't been flattened to the ground by a twister, flood, bushfire etc - but has simply moved to a new location.
I'll just pack up my cabin, put in on a truck, and see you in the new location.

Shortened my long blathery post...
Sorry, I am up late filling time til I feel sleepy again...and am the first to post...I don't go looking for posts from people I've met. I respond...to ideas, I guess. Ideas I feel something about. And just about everyone, met or not, has posted an interesting idea. Whatever stimulates an idea that I feel I connect with (or admittedly, that I disagree with and have another idea about)- and, anything can inspire an idea (sometimes maybe not what the OP intended :( bigtime thread derailer here. Sorry.) I imagine they all had to come from a real person! We never met...I think I met everyone you met in BC, but the following year. It'd be great to meet and have a drink with you someday Pilgrims. Happy travels! Maybe (probably) see you at WC2 in the future. In awhile crocodile! :)

Your growing up experience sounds most interesting. Like "Little House on the Prairie", but "Little House in the Outback". I've always lived, if not in a big city, a moderate sized city. I have relatives in a couple of very small towns. And although I like the quaintness, the familial-ness (?) of visiting...I would go nuts living there for an extended period. Where you can't go a block without someone making small talk. I am full of paradoxes. There's nothing bad about people who make small talk, and I am not a snob- I am just an introvert. An introvert who makes a point of saying hello to a stranger in the elevator (?) but gets shy at parties and doesn't like bumping into people I know who want to make small talk. I value privacy (and yet spill my guts here- there's a paradox for ya). I like people but don't always want them around. I like quiet time. I like 2 a.m. and a blank screen or sheet of paper to write down my daydreams, memories, ideas. When my in-laws visited we lived like sardines for 10 days...it was great. At the same time, I couldn't wait to have our space, and quiet, back- quiet in the middle of a busy city- and I missed them dearly right after they left! My mother in-law and I email quite often- and she writes very passionately. I enjoy that. Just not the noise and constant activity. I prefer email to Skype. It's easier to talk on the phone than to have the same conversation in person- unless it's family- and I am not sure why. Another strange paradox, eh?

Both. I like people I'm friends with, family, etc. I read some blogs only because I know the person writing them.
On WC, I don't go out seeking posts only because I know someone. I read the posts I find interesting. When it comes to certain posters I do get a feel for them, but some of my perceptions are probably off.
I post about personal things (hopefully they come off as genuine, because they are) but I also post about ideas.

Room for All is all about people. I don't think I posted on it right away, but I have read all the posts there.

The biggest thing that WC has done for me is meeting up with all the folk that I did not know previously.
I have become such a good friend of PP that when I phone her and she is sleeping , she growls and I hang up. I love it.
Chemgal. WC2 is stacking up to be the same
See you all there.( You too Kimmio)

WC has been an interesting journey for me. Sometimes I feel I can express myself better in writing than verbally, so this has been a place to share and consider ideas. It has also been a wonderful place to meet new friends, and reconnect with old ones. It has given me a larger social network of people I have met, and people I haven't. Hopefully some of whom I merely have yet to meet.
I am looking forward to WC2 with some trepidation. I hope it is able to succeed and thrive. I am sad that this forum has not been a priority for the UCCan because it has had some promise. I have enjoyed reading the ideas and opinions here. Sometimes the ones I disagree with most have had the most impact on me. Isn't that what community is about? Sharing ideas, and disagreeing. Learning from each other. Etc. I hope it will continue in its revised form on WC2.

I have a preference for the layout of the forums here - but I know I'm going to enjoy WC2........
You never know Northwind, one day you may see this hitchhiker on the Alaskan Highway........
All the best to those not moving to WC2 - and, to those that are off to WC2, au revoir.

What do you prefer about the layout here? The admins are open to suggestions if the reasoning is more than I am used to wondercafe.
Personally, I find the new site faster to navigate.

I really hope that you come to the Alaska Highway area soon Pilgrim!
I am familiar with the new format through other boards. It is odd to start, but I think will prove to be a better format. I'm confident you will enjoy the change Pilgrim.

The new site is faster to navigate - and, as a result, I find that that seems to encourage snappy, more concise posts......
Perhaps because I'm older, I feel more comfortable with the slower pace here?
I'm wondering if brevity will replace complexity on WC2?
I don't know quite how to express it - but I find myself skimming quickly over the posts on the new site.
I guess I'm just a gal who like to take time to smell the roses......
That said, I realise I grew up in a world that was of a slower pace, and like others of my generation, I'll have to learn to move with the times. (Just hope my mental zimmer frame is up to the task!)

I had a look. Some interesting threads. Most of the posts I read are more concise, but on R&F there are some longer posts- eg. one of Rev John's posts about the Genesis creation stories. The thread about creation started to get interesting. I've lurked but won't join for a little while if I do. I'd rather have a look and see once in awhile as to how it unfolds and take some time out for awhile.

Sometimes it takes time for the serious conversations to get going. I don't feel like the room for all posts are very different than the ones here. You actually can't post too many responses *quickly* in a row there, there's a time limit. I really noticed that when making my tips headings!
Mendalla also pointed out that you get more words per line there, so many of those posts may just appear shorter.

They probably put that in there for people like me who post too much in a row. Lol.

I post in a row too. I never heard of such a forum rule before re Chemgal. They want to hear from us as long as its not too much .

I've seen other forums with it too. It's seconds, not minutes. It helps with spammers. You can still edit to your heart's content, as fast as you can :)

So, you mean you have to edit faster? That defeats the purpose, kind of.
chemgal

No, you can edit as fast as you want, or as slow. It's multiple posts that cannot be made quickly.

We only have 1/2 second.....a whole second....2 seconds to post? Even after all these years I'm a slow typist so I'll have to click ......"like" as in facebook and forget about the rest of what I might say. Its O.K. 'tho as long as the people "like" it.

I got it. The first post can have some meat but not subsequent posts by the same person at the same time. They are limited re time and words. That's it? You gotta spit it all out in the first round.
chemgal
Posted on: 06/23/2014 00:46
Stardust, see how you have 2 back to back posts here?
If it took you less than ~30s to write the second after the first, you would have to wait before hitting save if there was a similar limit here.
It's a nice feature, as it also cuts down on double posts.

If you 2 want to test it out, you could join and then try to make 2 posts quickly. :)

Here I go..posting in a row having my last fling............
You said you can't post too many responses in a row? Does that mean the "people" in general can't post too many reponses in a row. This would lead to shorter threads, not the lengthy ones like we have on WC. Is that the goal along with discouraging spammers? Or does it only apply to one person posting as I'm doing now, 3 posts in a row?
chemgal
Posted on: 06/23/2014 00:55
It's a minimum wait period for one poster between submitting posts. After having one post up, you cannot have another one up right away.
This stops say a spammer getting out 100 posts in a minute, they would instead be limited to 2 in that time frame.
You can have multiple posts in a row, just not quickly.
chemgal
Posted on: 06/23/2014 00:58
You said you can't post too many responses in a row?
Quickly
You can post as many times in a row as you wish, but you just have to wait.
I don't know why you 2 are seeing this as a bad thing?
chemgal
Posted on: 06/23/2014 01:03
This would lead to shorter threads, not the lengthy ones like we have on WC.
If anything, it encourages longer posts. I can respond with one word to many posts very quickly here. Writing out a longer post takes a while.
A good example was writing the tips. When I wrote out the points in each post, this minimum wait period was not an issue, as it took me time to write every step.
For some of the tips, I made each post a heading, and went back and edied in the information. Posting just the heading every time takes seconds, so I had to wait between each, as I hadn't yet reached the minimum wait time between posts.

I'm not. It just wasn't clear at first. Thanks for explaining. I remember a couple of years ago a spammer posted a bunch of similar posts in a row that seemed weird, not quite real, on different threads (it wasn't SB- it might have been an electronically generated thing.) it was discovered and fixed. I guess that's the sort of thing you're talking about (...lol I edited this a few times)

Yep, and if the post button is hit twice by accident, the first post will go through, but the second one will get the error message of trying to post too fast, so you can look it over and decide to not DP, or wait it out and do it on purpose :)
Kimmio
Posted on: 06/23/2014 01:20
It's like the limit in wondermail. I have had conversations on wondermail that moved pretty fast (not in seconds but there was a limit to how many you can send in a certain timeframe- so say I was conversing with Sally and Bob at the same time it froze me out after a certain number of wondermails and I had to wait. Happened when we were nominating people.)

Good. It bugs me when either my system or the WC system (not sure) is slow and you get double posts. Sometimes triple.

Pilgrims Progress is pretty patient. I don't think she'll get upset. Hope not. Sorry Pilgrims. Besides, it's the late in the afternoon tomorrow there already (that always boggles my mind. My bil went to Oz we were communicating and it was the first time the time difference really struck me. You're almost a whole day ahead of me in BC- maybe that's why I'm always falling behind). At this hour you probably have shrimps on the barbie, a good glass of wine- and could care less! :)
