Good question.  I've been thinking for a while that it doesn't really fit me as well.  One of my issues with signing up with any site is coming up with a new user name though.  If it's the same, it's because I couldn't come up with something better :)

If I do switch it, I will make others aware and will see if I can get the same avatar up, at least for a while.

Would definitely use my current name and avatar. 

Why don't we have a thread here where you can reserve your current username? If anyone rushes to register and takes it, admins will give it back to you. Pretty low chances of that happening, but this way it certainly won't happen to you.

Rather than a thread, where we may have to hunt through it to find things, how about a Wondermail? Would the admin team (Aaron?) be okay if we set up a Wondercafe2 account here (with one of us holding the password) so people can Wondermail the requests to it? I'll PM (Wondermail will be PM on the new board, trust me) Aaron to see.

Just a thought that might keep things more orderly.

For myself, I'm not 100% sure. I have a raft of different usernames out there on the Internet (for reasons of privacy and discretion) but remain rather attached to Mendalla so likely 99.9% sure (or "three nines uptime" as they call it in IT speak).

here is my recommendation based on the wisdom of others who have posted before..but trying to redue noise.

1.  If we can create a new wondercafe2adm account on this site, then, we post a new thread asking folks to reserve their name.  If not, we use this thread. (stay tuned)

2.  If there is a conflict over a name, then, we ask the owner from wondercafe to send a wondermail to the wondercafe2adm account with a keywork.  We can then use that keyword to help show ownership.  

The idea here to remove unncessary noise, but, also have a secure way to prove ownership.

The dependency is the site comes up and is available with enough lead time before the site closes down.  Based on conversations to-date, I am sure that is doable.

I think I would keep Beloved if I could, but I would also be okay if I couldn't - I could come up with another name.

Just a question - is it in a new site's best interest to keep usernames? Is this common by users who frequent several sites?

I use variants of Pinga on multiple sites.  I also used my real name on some sites.

It depends on purpose of the site.

I have a tendency to write too personal sometimes on the WC  forum .

I'm aware that Google picks up all  or most of our posts. I may be included as "stardust"  within someone's user name and WC  threads on Google which is O.K.  but I don't like to be singled out too much on Google regarding my identity. E.g. I used my surgeon's name while writing in social  on WC. He found the article   on Google and told me he had read what I had written. Luckily, I don't think I wrote any complaints about him.  He was/is a good doctor. 

Consequently I like  the user name "stardust"  because its so very common re the cosmos that I don't get discovered personally on Google.   I'm low on the list of stardust articles in Google  if I do.

I doubt if anyone else wants to be a green lizard, so will be keeping "gecko46".

Actually I've decided that I will keep "qwerty".  It rhymes with "wordy", sort of  ... and therefore, it seems better than any other .... for me, at least.  I thought maybe I could make do with "poiuyt" or "yuiop" and they are just as good as "qwerty" in terms of easy typing but they just don't have the poetry of "gecko" or "mendalla" or the mystery of "pinga"  so I guess "qwerty" it is going to have to be.  Please try, then, to reserve "qwerty" for me please.

At this time, we don'trequire a wondermail.

Our hope is to have the site up before this one shuts down. If we do, then you will be asked to register your own name on the new site.  If you find someone takes it, then we will ask you to send us a wondermail with a "secret word".

The thought is most people will just get their name.

For any conflicts, we can then go to wondermail.

Saves work on the admins.

If you want my advice, think carefully about your new name and then stick with it.

I do not care what you call yourself on Wondercafe2 but just be happy with what you choose. Name changes will likely require admin intervention so we will probably limit them in some way. There will be better uses for our time than renaming someone's account every time the whim to change their name comes along.

Usernames really should not require changes very often. Occasionally they can be outgrown but many (most?) of us seem to become more attached to them as time goes on. 

I just don't want anyone else using my user name on the new site. That would be creepy. Not that anyone would, but they could, if we don't reserve our usernames.

There is nothing that can stop someone from using your name. What we can do is ensure that when two people say "I'm ____", that we have a way to find out who is the original.

Okay. So, I guess that means the original person would have to join. Would be pretty weird to be lurking (you gotta know some people are going to do that- how could they not be at least curious?) and then discover someone else using their name. Weird. If I'm ever considered a nuisance I want to be one in my own right. ;)

It just occurred to me that people who've messed around before with sock puppets could mess around again with original usernames. I hope they don't is all. I could see no other reason for them to pick most of the names here. Kimmio may not be 'that' original, though. It's a nickname. Can I put a copyright on it?

Well, Kimmio, if a sock-puppet took "Beloved", I would just post on threads all over the forum, or PM everyone, and let them know it wasn't me, and what name I would now have to go by as "Beloved" was used by someone else.

I went back and forth between Hilary and Hilarity before I signed up in 2007.  I haven't decided which I will use on the new site.
