Planet Earth - Our Sustainable Future

Welcome,

Here you will find discussions and ideas pertaining to the economic, environmental and spiritual changes you see around you today. It may surprise you to know that the future of our oil reserves is not unlimited.  It may also surprise you to know that there is a shift in the thinking of many people such as yourself towards a more self sustaining future. Deep inside many people sense a change in the air and have yet to recognise it. The planet is changing with or without us.

Our reliance on fossil fuels, electricity, credit cards, cell phones and the microwave is finite and we must prepare for a world without them.  Here you will find ideas, support, links to other sites and general discussion about what we can do locally to provide a better future for ourselves and generations to come.  No Doomsayers allowed.  Only those with good ideas who are willing to share need apply.

the simple life

I have actually found that living in the city can be just as simple.  I share a 2 bedroom house with my daughter.  I walk her to school whenever I can. We have a community gardening plot.  The park with an ice rink is a 10 min walk.  The bike path is 1/2 a block away.  We walk to the grocery store and the hardware store. We compost.  I gave up on a front lawn last year for a garden with mulch - so much easier to maintain!  I have solar pv panels for electricity and solar thermal for hot water.  I bought a porch swing a year ago- it is our favourite spot in the summer.  It is satisfying when we can have a whole day without taking the car out of the driveway.

Urban or rural, it doesn't matter.  What matters is our intentions.  One of my favourite songs from church years ago (Catholic) contained the line "and they will know we are Christians by our walk".   It is through out intentions and our actions that we will be known - both in public, and with our kids.  We always need to be mindful to walk the talk.  People notice.

A few small things lead to big changes

Recently, my family (my two girls and myself and our cat and dog) moved from Saskatoon to Langham (a small town just outside of Saskatoon).  Out of neccessity, we were renting a three bedroom triplex in a fairly nice part of town and paying waaaayyy too much in rent.  It was sustainable last year when I had some money and the price of oil was over 120 bucks a barrel.  Not anymore.  Lately It occurred to me that downsizing almost everything in our lives would be a good idea.  It was something that had been nagging at me over and over...this living the life of abundance while having very little to actually pay for it.  My father had warned me about living beyond my means and now it really made sense.  Besides, I didn't like city life anymore.  I missed small town - the quiet, the friendly people, the stars, the great lightning shows in the summer, cookouts, town parades, curling bonspiels, and the security of knowing that if you forgot to lock the door no one was going to break in.  As well, we've decided to be a lot greener.  We are now composting, saving rainwater, planning a garden, spending more time with each other and not in front of the tv.  In fact I have taken evening walks with my kids more this week than I have in a long time.  Not only do I feel healthier, but I know I am a lot happier too.  Why didn't I do this sooner?  I guess I had to be a town mouse for a little while before I realized I like being a country mouse.
