Spirit Express

An Invitation to Conversation with the Moderator

Responding with Hope to Climate and Ocean Change

During the Copenhagen climate change talks in December 2009, I saw shrivelled ears of maize, withered by unprecedented degrees of African drought; and bleached, dead Pacific coral, victim of the increasing acidity of the ocean: powerful symbols of the increasing environmental challenges we face.

What symbols tell you that our world is changing? Where do you find symbols of hope to address these challenges?

As spiritual leader of The United Church of Canada, hope is my business. I’m travelling throughout Canada by train, stopping for a series of town hall conversations about how we can come together for the healing of soul, community, and creation.

I will share my own stories and symbols, and I invite you to do the same. Please bring your stories and symbols—such as an object, a poem, or an image—to represent environmental distress and hope in your community or your personal life. Many of these symbols will become part of the stories I share as my “Spirit Express” travels throughout the country.

Please come and take part in this journey of hope either in person or online at the uniting conversations.
