Moderator Mardi Tindal's blog: Embracing Hope

I had my picture taken last night embracing Hope. Hope is one of the cows Jeff Peters and other Kingston, ON, area farmers are caring for while hoping prison farms will be reinstated, and they will have a ready herd for them to get restarted.

Disturbing stories of suffering in Japan and our own anxieties about hazards from damaged nuclear reactors have focused our prayers for more than a week. The death of a beloved daughter of friends has broken my heart open further.

On March 7th and 8th I was in Ottawa with other faith leaders, urging the government to adopt the recent recommendations of a multi-party parliamentary committee report entitled Federal Poverty Reduction Plan: Working in Partnership Towards Reducing Poverty in Canada.

Moderator's Lent 2011 Video Message

Dear Friends in Christ,

As I walked through the Garden of Gethsemane last week, I was weary. Full days and nights of meeting with church partners and others in Israel-Palestine had meant moving daily among armed soldiers, through checkpoints, sitting and listening to apprehensions, deep longings for peace and justice, and courageous work. I felt both full and empty.

I’m now home after 12 days of listening intently (morning, afternoon, and evening) to two peoples of three faiths: Palestinians and Israelis who are Christian, Jewish, and Muslim. I was travelling with the Working Group on Middle East Policy, which will report to the 41st General Council in 2012 on how the United Church can contribute to a just peace in the Middle East. We were joined by two members of the Theology and Inter-Church Inter-Faith Committee.

Yesterday Walter Sowa sent me a wonderful memory of Bob McClure (Moderator from 1968 to 1971.) I just had to share it:
 
Bob McClure once spoke to our congregation at Erindale. He had two things to say to us: first, church congregations should be joyful if you want others to come in (and he demonstrated how you should walk, with a bounce, not shuffling in slow motion); and, second, he had high hopes for humankind because we are adaptable.
