Moderator Mardi Tindal's blog: Embracing Hope

I had my picture taken last night embracing Hope. Hope is one of the cows Jeff Peters and other Kingston, ON, area farmers are caring for while hoping prison farms will be reinstated, and they will have a ready herd for them to get restarted.

Moderator Mardi Tindal's blog: To you, O God, I call

Disturbing stories of suffering in Japan and our own anxieties about hazards from damaged nuclear reactors have focused our prayers for more than a week. The death of a beloved daughter of friends has broken my heart open further.

Moderator Mardi Tindal's blog: Women's Day, Lent, and Parliament

On March 7th and 8th I was in Ottawa with other faith leaders, urging the government to adopt the recent recommendations of a multi-party parliamentary committee report entitled Federal Poverty Reduction Plan: Working in Partnership Towards Reducing Poverty in Canada.

Moderator Mardi Tindal's blog: Tal and Aysha

I’m now home after 12 days of listening intently (morning, afternoon, and evening) to two peoples of three faiths: Palestinians and Israelis who are Christian, Jewish, and Muslim. I was travelling with the Working Group on Middle East Policy, which will report to the 41st General Council in 2012 on how the United Church can contribute to a just peace in the Middle East. We were joined by two members of the Theology and Inter-Church Inter-Faith Committee.

Moderator Mardi Tindal's blog: Soul, community, creation through Lent

When Betty Lynn Schwab asked how I would feel if she adopted “God’s healing of soul, community, and creation” as the focus of this year’s United Church Lenten devotional book, I was delighted. The biblical reflections and prayers of eight extraordinary writers now offer us an unprecedented opportunity for shared spiritual practice and theological discussion on this theme using this book, Rising with the Morning Star.

Moderator Mardi Tindal's blog: Salt, light, and Black history

Earlier today I passed along a note from Walter Sowa about former Moderator Dr. Bob McClure. I also find myself thinking today about the Very Rev. Dr.

Moderator Mardi Tindal's blog: With a bounce

Yesterday Walter Sowa sent me a wonderful memory of Bob McClure (Moderator from 1968 to 1971.) I just had to share it:

Bob McClure once spoke to our congregation at Erindale. He had two things to say to us: first, church congregations should be joyful if you want others to come in (and he demonstrated how you should walk, with a bounce, not shuffling in slow motion); and, second, he had high hopes for humankind because we are adaptable.

Moderator Mardi Tindal's blog: Encouragement from Mennonite friends

I’m travelling to Epiphany Explorations today, thinking about Epiphany as a season for renewing our response to Christ’s call, and encouraging one another in our respective responses to Christ’s call.

Moderator Mardi Tindal's blog: Remembering Haiti

Re-membering is about putting pieces together. There are many pieces yet to be put together in Haiti since last January’s earthquake. Much of what we will hear in this week’s news, about all that remains broken, will be deeply discouraging. And there will be truth in those reports. Too little of what we will hear is encouraging. Yet the truth is that good work is being done to put the pieces of Haitian society together.
