Another band anniversary

The CBC music channel on Youtube strikes again with another anniversary celebration for a great Canadian band. As you may recall, last time it was Blue Rodeo's 25th anniversary:

One of the guests at that concert was Newfoundland folk-pop band Great Big Sea. Well, guess who's turning 20 this year?

25 years of Blue Rodeo

Back in 1987. a new Canadian band appeared on the scene that caught my attention from their very first single, Outskirts of Life. Subsequent singles from that debut album and its successor confirmed the band as one of my favorites and, perhaps, as one of the great Canadian bands of my lifetime. The band was, and is, Blue Rodeo, fronted by singer-songwriters Greg Keelor and Jim Cuddy. I don't think I've heard a really bad song from these two.

Recent songs I'm lovin'

"Take it on Faith" - Matt Mays

Apparently, Matt's been around the Canadian music scene for a while but I'd never heard of him until this song went into heavy rotation on CBC 2.

"Out of the Game" - Rufus Wainwright

For some reason, I've found it hard to get into Rufus even though, on paper, he's an artist I should love. This is the title track of the album that may change that.

Jesus in Pop songs

CBC Music published a list of songs with "Jesus" in the title. Of course you could probably go on much longer if you also include songs like "Spirit in the Sky" and "Suzanne" that mention him in the lyrics but not the title. Funny thing is that I don't really know most of the list. The only one I know well is Green Day's Jesus of Suburbia, which is one of my son's favorite Green Day songs.

Songs that could be hymns/anthems ... but aren't

Ever come across songs that just seem like they would be a good hymn or anthem, at least for special occasions or themes? Happens to me occasionally.

Favorite 2011 songs

Another year over, a new one has begun. So, what songs from 2011 did you like? I've been trying to figure out which songs that I like were even released in 2011. For instance, the "new" albums from Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons, two of my recent faves, were actually 2010 albums.

However, one that I know was a 2011 release was the latest from Feist. The album is called "Metals" and the fantastic first single is "The Circle Married the Line".

My new earworm

Can't get "Pumped up Kicks" by Foster the People out of my head. It's a catchy, infectious little pop song getting fairly high rotation on some stations. I liked this fan-made video better than the official one:

Bye, bye REM

REM announced today that they are ending the band after 31 years. I first discovered them via MTV in the eighties and loved their music through the nineties. Kind of lost track on them in the last decade.

The One I Love (the song that first got me into REM)

New songs

The song "Friday" by teenager Rebecca Black has quickly earned a rep for being awful in an entertaining sort of way. It is pretty bad, IMHO, but is it the epic fail that the 'Net is painting it as being? Decide for yourself.
