Truth or Fantasy?

Truth or Fantasy?  2013 08 18 Jer 23:15-32

A mother asked her son what he learned in Sunday School.  He said that Moses led the Israelites on a pontoon bridge across the Red Sea while God sent fighter aircraft to stop the Egyptian soldiers from attacking them.  She was surprised and asked if that was really what he was taught.  He said, "No, but if I told you what she said, you wouldn't believe me."

Where Do Prophets Arise FromÉ

Hebrew Scripture reading for Sunday, August 22 is Jeremiah 1:4-10.

My question, should you decide to try to answer, is this:  Are prophets born or made?

Have at it.

Does God Hate Our Worship?

That is my sermon question this week, using the Isaiah lection.  Does
worship help us do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God or does
it get in the way?

Richard Manley-Tannis: Knowing a Prophet!

And Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there and prophesy there." - Amos 7.12

I was once at a Presbytery meeting in Northeast Saskatchewan and, as is the wont of United Church folk, we were discussing justice stuff. We like to talk about justice in United Church circles - in fact it is often one of the glues that bind us. And in that time - I think we were revisiting discussions around uranium, our involvement in the global trade of nuclear technology, and its impact on lives and the environment - when someone piped up and said, "Why are prophets so grumpy?" There was a pause and then laughter.
