Why the Bible?

Okay, a lot of the discussion around here ultimately comes down to "how do you interpret and understand The Bible"?

If one is a Christian, The Bible is something that one has to reckon with and develop some kind of understanding of.

But why The Bible?

If you are of the conservative, fundamentalist, or traditionalist wings, there's no question of why. The Bible is the basis of Christian faith because it says it is. The fact that that is a circular argument doesn't seem to matter.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood

In a different thread, I suggested that a poster " moves to  solution, before listening to the questions, or thinking / dialoguing."

This thread will be an attempt to dialogue on that item, and so, I pulled one of the 7 habits of highly effective people as a topic.

Newb with a Question: Horizontal Transcendence in Scripture?

Hi gang.

I'm a newb to the wondercafe. Thought I'd introduce myself and tell you all about a project I need some help with. Well, actually, I mean... you see it's for a friend of mine...

A while ago I read Ursula Goodenough's The Sacred Depths of Nature. Have you heard of it? That got me interested in something called Horizontal Transcendence - the basic idea is that instead of going up we expand across and connect. Visually, imagine bridges instead of ladders.

Why do you suppose Jesus never wrote anything down?

Hello everyone.....

I was wondering why Jesus never wrote anything down (in the way of scripture)

It is reasonable to assume that he was capable as he did read from the scroll of Isaiah and he also wrote things in the sand when dealing with the woman caught in adultery situation.

As a teacher, why didn't he write anything down or at least have his disciples write important things down?    There was certainly Luke (the physician) and Matthew (the tax collector) who would have been capable.

Who Am I? Who Should I Be?

This Sunday marks the first Sunday of Lent.  Starting on Ash Wednesday (2 days from now) Lent is a 40 day (not counting Sundays) season that ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter.

Every year on the 1st Sunday of Lent we are invited to consider the story of Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness.  This year one of the partner readings is the story of Adam and Eve eating the fruit of knowledge of good and evil.  You can read these two passages here.

Underqualified Disciples

So....how much risk are you willing to take as a disciple? What is your sense of readiness to do a task....

Something less serious A is for Name the person

Some times we get a little serious. So I thought I would post a little fun thing to do.

Name the person from the bible

A is for Adam

The next person does B is for

then C is for ... etc When we reach the end we start al over again.

Only catch is you can just name the person, you have to give a one or two sentence discription of them as well as tells us where their are mention in the Bible.

I did this a number of years ago when I was up North as a 27 week Children's story series.

Good news

I have been away from WC for a while. I had to do a paper and write one mid-term.  I then got out of the habit of checking out WC as it was distracting me from focusing on my courses. I am taking a course on Economics and Ethics, and will be blogging and posting about some interesting things I am learning. Especially concerning the latest Christian /RC  thinking on Economics.
