The Treatment of Females within Different Cultures

Hi,

I am a grade 12 student, and for my Enlish final project I have to write a report. I choose to write about females, mostly  younger females in different cultures and how they are treated in conflict. I have already read the books  The Bite of the Mango by Mariatu Kamara, which is really good. I also read The Diary of Anne Frank .

Points that i plan on discussing are: How /why  girls not valued as much as boys are? If someone is suppose to be a leader then why are they killing people.

Questions that I have are : what is a leader? Why do different religions treat males and females soo different than we do? Is it us who are different or is it them? What are these girls lives going to turn out as? after being raped, after being beaten, after all of the conflict going on around them.

So, anyone who wants to share their ideas, opinions and if you have any other points that you think that i should include in my report  is greatly appreciated. The more feedback the better.

Thankss so much

You ask very interesting questions. The answer is simple --- patriarchy. For an excellent analysis read "When God was a Woman" by Merlin Stone. By the way, I regard patriarchy as arguably the most pernicious evil that mankind has ever inflicted on itself. We in the western world are drawing away from patriarchy but it is a painfully slow process.

Wow...  For grade 12 you are sure delving into some deep and contemporary discussions.  History of religion, Philosophy, Psychology, and Anthropology all have their own answers to those questions.  It would be very hard to trace a begining of patriarchy especially with only a few weeks to do the research.  I would find a textbook from a first year university course on Women's studies.  A good place to ask which would be a good one to use would be to contact the department of Women's studies at Queens University in Kingston  www.queensu.ca/wmns/

Hi there!

Two other good fiction books to read that might provide some ideas for reflection are Parvana's Journey and the Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis. They are short books and written for a much younger crowd but they lead to interesting discussions.

Sounds like an interesting paper! Good luck!
