Nine Lives

I saw a friend who told me she is afraid of being pregnant.. afraid of the pain all that will bring up for her and yet doesnt want the medication to hold the pain at bay... It made me think of thiis poem I wrote after my daughter was born. There are so many things I fear and fear tries to hold me back. But I also remember a quote from the Starhawk book, The Fifth Sacred Thing, "Where there is fear, there is power." That was my experience too... So this is for you, friend...
Nine Lives
Those nine long months we spent tethered
talking, floating in our sameness
I did not know
you were plotting my return
did not know that with your birthing
would come my own
With a watery wailing
push push push
you flew past the scars
the burns and broken bones
my body’s book of shame.
I screamed loud and long
scarcely believing that from
that place could come
good - could come
innocence - could come
beauty.
Today I watch you sing and dance
and look at me with trusting eyes
and I know now why I survived.
I am here and you are here
as a testament to hope
and the nine lives of spirit.
