The Road to Hell

The Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions..never more true when you discover that the local government plans on legalizing home delivery of alcohol.  I heard this one on CBC the other day and thought "Boy, they just want to shove it down peoples throats don't they".  Never once did I ever hear anyone say..."I sure wish I could get someone to deliver my 6pack to the apartment...it would sure save money and time from having to run to the pesky liquor store"  I have heard people say..."I wish I could get my groceries delivered to my home, I am so sick and elderly and my family lives in another province."  Coming from a long line of alcoholics in the family, suffice it to say that this announcement sent up a bunch of red flags!  I know that when my dad was a drinker he would have thought this was a great idea.  So would my uncle who still struggles with the disease, so would my grandfather(deceased) and my brother(also deceased from an alcohol related accident), and my ex-husband and myself.  Why? Because it is embarassing to be addicted and there is a part of the alcoholic that hates going to the store - YOU WISH SOMEONE COULD DROP IT ON YOUR DOORSTEP AND LEAVE...so you could continue to not be accountable to anyone (especially the clerk selling it to you).  Sure they say there will be all kinds of regulations and ID checking and meetings and memorandums and special licence upgrades and facility tours and flights to the bahamas (oops was that my outside voice?)....who cares?  What good does it do you or me?  Who thought this stupid idea up anyways?  See, what I do know is that the Unions here are very nervous about privatization and they even had an ad campaign that basically threatened that you and I would not have the same kinds of safety, services and programs without the sales of liquor by the government owned stores.  The message of the ad however, basically promoted drinking as a way of funding these services - No drinking, No police force...No drinking, No summer camps for kids....No drinking, No road pavement....YOU GET THE PICTURE.  If you look at the Government of Saskatchewan statistics on drinking related diseases and accidents caused from drinking, or if you knew someone who died from drinking...would you think this was a good idea?  I know I don't and I urge anyone who has been touched by alcoholism to write their local government and MP and tell them they are headed down a very dark path indeed.

I can feel your pain and frustration. I am sorry that one person must have to carry such a lot of baggage. I hope you are part of a very supportive group, faith group, any such group. I don't think government should sell anything, anyway. Period. But this is not your issue, I know what your concern is, and you are right. Love
