Pioneers to the township built this congregation 180 years ago. Today, as a mix of rural and urban members, we maintain the tradition of service and fundraising for our community and enjoy the knowledge of our history. We continue to celebrate our renovation and development of our 1860 building. Our nursery is run with a series of volunteers. We have an exciting Church School program which currently hosts 3 age groups. Each year in June at our outdoor service, the children present the program. The UCW (United Church Women) continues to meet monthly with both a monthly program and a social aspect that continues to sponsor Christian Education in the church. This is accomplished through sponsoring the Observer costs, the Sunday School curriculum, University ministry, church camps, and overseas ventures. The UCW also continues to monitor member's health and life events - acknowledging needs and events in the lives of the members of the church. The catering group (as a subcommittee) continues to run a fully stocked industrial kitchen - which is beautifully maintained. The choir at Barrie Hill, headed by Susan Spicer, leads music and plays a valued role in our worship service. Occasionally they bring forward more contemporary music, and currently recorded music is played prior to the service beginning. Throughout the fall, winter, and spring, the choir teaches new music to the congregation, leads sing songs, and at both Easter and Christmas lead us with fine special performances. The choir shares their love of music with the junior members of the church, creating youth choirs for special events. We have special outreach that recognizes our unique rural roots. The development of the Food Grains project with some town churches, continues to "harvest" great things. Our commitment to the M&S (Mission and Service) fund is shown in our yearly pledges being met, and in our focus on Mission Minutes which are read bi-monthly.
Regular Sunday worship service starts at 11:00 am worship service. Summer worship services begin at 10:00 am. There is a Coffee/Beverage time before the service.
Located just north of Eramosa on County Road 124 (formerly highway 24), and south of Fergus - Barrie Hill faces County Rd 29. This road is now a well travelled route of people heading around Guelph, or moving toward the "Orangeville" road east of Fergus. Our building is still surrounded by viable farms, with some housing edging the road. Settled early in the 1830's this road has two churches - Barrie Hill (formerly 1st Presbyterian of Eramosa) and Speedside (originally Congregationalist) our sister church - less that 3 concessions apart. A few of the original farm families remain at the church, but now many members are "new" arrivals - who seek a rural church - and a community minded congregation. The central schools for your younger people are Eramosa Public School, Ponsonby Public School and Rockwood Centennial in the country and June Avenue Public in Guelph. Our younger adults attend Guelph's John F. Ross C.V.I and Fergus' Centre Wellington. With the location being half way between Fergus and Guelph, sports teams and local facilities are used in both areas. The Marden and Rockwood Libraries serves the community well. Wellington County Museum hosts many items associated with our original settlers.
