East Plains UC has approximately 450 individuals under Pastoral Care. Some obviously are more active than others in the life of the church but all share a bond with the church that dates back to the original church built in 1843, when Joseph Lyons gave the land upon which the original church was built. The Memorial Stone for Joseph Lyons lies in our Cemetery.
We are a diversified congregation with many talents and interests. Theologically, some hold a more conservative or traditional understanding of the Bible, some a more liberal and less literal interpretation in keeping with more recent New Testament scholarship. The majority seem comfortable somewhere in between these positions; all are accepted and welcome. Some attend our Sunday service dressed casually (sport shirts, slacks, jeans) others prefer a more conservative attire (shirt, tie, dress). At the committee level, debate is sometimes lively but in the end, we pull together to work as a team and accomplish some amazing things.
What are we known for? Internally, we have a very dedicated, energetic and hard working group of people who do their best to promote the life of the church. Our Wider Work Ministry in particular enjoys a great reputation for its attention to social justice and environmental issues. Basic to our membership is supporst for the mission and service fund of the UCCan. Externally, two activities are well known to the Aldershot community: our Arts and Craft Sale, held the first Saturday in November is now entering its 40th year and our annual Perennial Plant sale, held the Friday and Saturday before Mother's Day in May. Funds raised from both of these activities help support social justice and various charitable causes.
Sunday 10am.
Our church is located on Plains Rd (east) in the historic village of Aldershot in the west end of Burlington. In the mid 1800's, Alex Brown of Waterdown built a substantial wharf on the site where the French explorer, Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, briefly landed on his way to the North American interior in 1669. LaSalle Park and Marina, located on Burlington Bay, is named after the French explorer.
Today, Plains Rd. is a very busy thoroughfare linking Hamilton via Hwy 403 in the west, with the QEW in the east. Gardens bloom along the boulevards that lead to the world-renowned Royal Botanical Gardens. Recently brand new condos have sprung up along Plains Rd. bringing new residents and business opportunities.
