Ellesmere United Church relocated to Burnaby Mountain in September, 2007, moving into a “loft” church that we designed to reflect the values of our congregation. The worship space is surrounded by a changing art gallery and features a labyrinth (modeled after Chartres) for personal meditative worship. Our communion table was carved by Susan Point, a well-known Salish Coast artist, in a basket weave design, on the theme of reconciliation showing the interconnectedness of people with each other and God's wider creation. Our congregation enjoys celebrating the arts and our intercultural community.
The community gathers at 10 am for worship on Sunday. Sunday School is provided for our children at the same time. On Wednesdays, there is a quiet time to walk the labyrinth or meditate at noon, followed by communion at 12:30.
We are located east of the main Campus between it and the UniverCity.
Our church is inside the Cornerstone building on the 1st floor down a grey hallway. Although it looks like we have a corporate exterior, the church is a welcoming space in warm wood and traditional 1st nation coastal colours.
There is parking available beneath the Cornerstone building on p1 for those worshipping with us on Sundays. Other times require meter parking or a permit. We are, however, very close to the Upper Bus Loop which offers many routes including a connection with the Skytrain at the Production Way Station on the Millenium Line.
Dr. Doug enjoys the mix of town and gown that accompanies being a university congregation. He has served congregations in Ontario and Quebec and holds a doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary and an MA from McGill University.Having studied art history and being a painter himself, Doug finds the arts a fruitful area for theological interaction and the deepening of our religious experience.
