As human beings and we are always operating on faith since we never know what the future has in store for us.
 
When we pressed the elevator button we wait because we have faith it will come. Based on this statement we should make a distinction between three kinds of faith: below reason, within reason and above reason.
 
The usual connotation of the word refers to the first kind of faith: below reason, meaning that we’ve been told something and we believe it without verifying it. This is the religious approach to faith.
 
Faith within reason is the basic method of science, and it is the kind of faith we base most of our actions on. Even if we are not 100% certain that a certain action would yield a certain result, based on our experience we use faith within reason to conduct our daily lives. This kind of faith is the very core of our existence, otherwise will be totally paralyzed and not take any action. Science and research use this kind of faith to create something new.
 
There is also faith above reason, also called “a leap of faith”. Again, we encounter this in science and it’s the way major advancements are made. Even though we thoroughly examined the issue within reason we conclude we have to proceed in a different direction. The difference between below reason and above reason, is that we first exhaust the ‘within reason’ avenues, and then proceed above reason, not the other way around.
 
Faith above reason is also the faith of true love between people. Love below reason is “puppy love” which has its merits don’t get me wrong, but it has a hard time standing the test of time. Love within reason it’s more of a contract on the heart and mind. However you will find true love and trust is above reason; it’s all encompassing and it includes the first two kinds of love within it.
