FUN -- pictures of your church via google maps

One of the posters placed a picture of their church via google maps streetscape.

I thought it was great, and wondered what ours looked like.

Then, i wondered, what other folks churches looked like

So, here is the front of ours:

View Larger Map Here is a picture from the side of the market, when the city hall work was still going on...if you walk up a bit, you can see the pub that I have been known to consume a beverage at.
View Larger Map This is the "working entrance"...where many people enter on Sundays...and, if you zoom around, you can see the old city hall, the new city hall, and the city hall parking lot (which we use )
View Larger Map finally, this is the other side...the building on the corner some of us think would make a great pub.

We are not on the Google Maps, but I did find us....

Google just took pictures of our town. What is that service called?

A really great trip down memory lane, Pinga.  Nothing's changed much.  Is the market still open year round on Saturday?  It was there when my mother was a kid, as was Wesley.

That looks like a lovely old church, Pinga.

I found mine, but can't seem to post a link that works. Help, please?!

The market still is open on Saturday year round, I am not sure about Wed mornings, though.....  Our church has a cafe every Sat morning.

wow, folks, i love the variety in the looks of the churches and the neighbourhoods, neat to see the pictures.

GordW -- do you use the upper or lower entrance normally? Is there a difference of who enters from where?

Rev Davis -- whatisthe newer building which is on the side?

northwind -- that's a pretty neat cross out front...

namaste, if you send me the address, I will see if it is do-able, and if so, send you instructions.

Bummer.  Neither of my churches are on street view.

Here's the last church I was a member at, though:

Both entrances are used regularly.  On office days only the top is open generally.  Midweek groups only use the bottom entrance as a rule.  But on Sundays there are some who always use the top door and some who always use the bottom.  THose with mobility issues use the lower as then there are no stairs to deal with.

Cool DKS, I entered our church address and found us on Streetview.

10364 100 St Fort St John. You can get a view of our town by circling around. We are sort of downtown. I am glad they took the pictures in the summer. I think they just did this last summer.

The upper part of it is basically offices and meeting space.

The lower part are classrooms.

It was originally added on in the '50's, but was extensively renovated in '85-86 after there was a major fire that largely destroyed that part and damaged the sanctuary. Pre-85 there was a gymnasium in that part of the building, which wasn't included in the rebuilt part. I think they should have rebuilt the gym; there's a lot you can do with a gym in a church. My office is the last window on the left, and since, if you scroll around to the back of the church, my car is there, I was probably in the office when the picture was taken!

hah fun, revdavis.

RevMatt -- that play area looks fun on the side of your church at the back.

How do people know which church door to enter?

I wonder how many other churches have play equipment?

GordW, I would have presumed the worship area was etnered via the top .

Match3Frog,

You google map to your address, then, you drag the little yellow person from the magnification board to your location.  spin around until you are facing your church.  you can double click on the "lines" presented in that image, to move around.  when you are happy with the picture, click on the word "link" in the upper corner.  then , copy the link.

nope, we have a single hall, most of the building only has the lower floor with a  high (20ft?) ceiling.  ARound the edge there is a mezzanine level with office spaces in the back corner and Sunday School Rooms close to the street.

You can find some pictures of the space under various posts on the church blog here

Pinga, the play structure belongs (belonged?  I've lost track) to a nursery school that was there for many years, but may or may not still be after the massive internal renovation.  The door closest to the road is the chapel, and the two halves of the building are now, in fact, owned seperately.  The chapel belongs to a non-UCC congregation.  Carolla can clarify, that's her church, too :)  But when I was there, and the whole building was ours, people frequently went to the wrong door.  It was part of the fun!

I can definitely imagine the bridal parties coming down the stairs at the doors to many of these old churches!  A beautiful picture.  But not so great for funeral pall-bearers I'm sure!

There are some architectural similarities.  Any chuch history buffs know much about that?  Were there standard sets of plans that architects worked from?  Or required elements (now it sounds like figure skating!)?

Funerals are not a problem for us. The casket leaves from the east door to the waiting coach parked in front. It's designated a Loading Zone for that very reason.

The Unitarian Fellowship of London, which is rather far back from the street so doesn't show up will in Street View. Here's a pic of the front entrance from our website.

As for the UCC I attend, here's a Street View of First St. Andrew's United. Again, too far back and lots of trees on the front lawn to obscure the view. So, again, here's one from their website.

I cannot figure out how to embed a link .... so if you're interested, the church we have been attending this year is at 3525 W 24th Ave Vancouver. The photo is taken from 24th which is the side entrance, office etc - the main doors of the church, steps going up to the narthex are on Collingwood St and you can't see that part of the church from the photo.

ok, folks, to get the link, follow these instructions.

1.  find your church, follow the instructions (using the little man), to get to the street view.

2.  once you have the image you want, click on the word "link" on the upper right.

3.  type in the wndercafe box, what it is we are going to see, switch to plain text editor, paste your html

Here is the side entrance of Mysts's church

now to walk around, double click on the lines, or drag the little guy to the new spot you want to go.

I didn't realize there was a UU on Clarke Road. Isn't there one near the university somewhere too? I have Gibbons Park on the brain, but that does not seem right.........

Gibbons Park was our original location. They moved c. 1998, before I became involved although I did visit the old location a few times for services as well as attending both a wedding and a memorial there (for the same person, no less). The original is now a Montessori school. Here's a Google Street View of it.

And thanks for the compliment on the garden, match3frog. We try to keep an organic, natural, etc. garden in keeping with our seventh principle.

One problem with Google maps is the time required to update. Our congregation recently amalgamated (Jan 1) and adopted a new name. Problem is, Google only shows the old name (and will for how long - a few years?).  I came across another resource called Wikimapia, which, like wikipedia, changes can be made on the spot - but it doesn't have streetview, though.

maps.google.ca/maps

I don't know yet if this works, but here's trying.....

Lots of trees in front of our church, so it's not easy to see the structure. Someone actually suggested that all the trees be cut down so it would be easier to see!  As an environmentalist, I was not amused...

Just before I left Hamilton, First Unitarian Church of Hamilton bought and started renovating a former hardware store (True Value, I think) where I had occasionally shopped. Twas kind of odd going in to worship the first couple times. Kept thinking, "oh yeah, that's where the xx aisle was" . They've done a beautiful job, now, of renovating the building into a proper church but I can't find a decent pic. It's off the street in an odd little lot next to the railway tracks on Dundurn St. S., so the Street View pic doesn't do it justice.

Ah yes, that is it. I moved away from Ontario in 1999. I lived in London from 1991 to 1995, so missed the move. We used to ride our bikes in that area. There is a lot to like about London.

Our congregation might be in a position to be looking for a new location soon. Some of us are thinking outside the box these days and are looking at empty stores and old buildings. Someone even suggested renting from other denominations.

although neat and tidy, it is nothing special to look at on the outside. It just looks like...a building.  It is when you get inside that you get that special feeling and presence of God.

We are a growing congregation and still searching for options.  A second service, a new location?

This is a growing trend, from what I understand.  The last time I attended "church", which was well over 10 years ago as part of a very small, very progressive MB congregation that shared space with a larger church of another denomination.

(I'd check it out again since I've moved back to the area, but I work every Sunday).
