Even 7am, the time here in Eastern would be a stretch for some folks. Bet you'll get more out for this than for a sunrise service, though :D.

All the bars in Saskatchewan except Prince Albert are opening early to watch the game. Sorry, I think this is unnecessary. Is alcohol necessary to watch the game?

I don't think it's about the alcohol - it's about gathering in with buddies to watch the game - and for many that gathering place is the local bar.

Our church is not opening - but some in the area are.

I think Rev. John mentioned in another thread that his church is.  Here in the East the game won't be over until church time.  We are having communion during the service and then our annual meeting.   I'm hoping some people will show up.

The bars in London won't be allowed to serve but they are still opening. They'll be serving breakfast with coffee instead. Apparently Toronto bars are going to be serving but that's because Toronto council has the authority under the City of Toronto act to override the liquor control folks temporarily (or something like that).

If it wasn't about the alcohol, then the bars would just open early and sell only non-alcoholic drinks, like the ones in London.

But unfortunately, alcohol and hockey and on-ice violence and off-ice violence all go hand-in-hand.

If Canada loses (and I know I'm blaspheming when I say 'if Canada loses"), but if Canada loses then all those drunk people could take to the streets and do a repeat of Vancouver 2011 Stanley Cup riot.

I hope all those cities that were foolish enough to extend the liquor laws will be smart enough to have extra police on patrol. But it seems to me that a town that wants to increase its revenue by extending the liquor hours will cancel out that extra profit by hiring extra police. Hardly seems worth it ......

Enjoy the game, all you hockey fans, and party responsibly.                                         (That means you, too, Vancouver ....)

I'm not watching tomorrow. I'm off to church, and it's my week to teach Sunday School (although I'm not sure if any parents will be ungluing themselves from the tv to bring anyone to Sunday School.) I guess I'll find out.

There are bars opening and serving alcohol at 5am here, but certainly not all of them!  It's not typically the sports bars that cause the problems.  Put some checkstops into place and beyond that I doubt that much more needs to be done.  I won't be going, but I have enjoyed some imbibing in the morning for special events in the past.  For the majority of people, it's all in good fun.

I don't suppose any of the churches streaming the game obtained special liquor licences? :)

Selling just non-alcohol drinks probably wouldn't be too profitable.  I know of bars that do this for other international events though, but food is also available :)

To clarify.

It will be live streamed into our sanctuary.  It is more of a guy thing than it is a church thing.

If the game is not over before our worship starts it will be shut off.  Though if it is a squeaker that might make for a very squirmy service.

Also, I very much doubt that I am going to have company this early in the day.  Since we didn't advertize ahead of time I may be watching it by myself.

Grace and peace to you.

John

I recall a late Sunday afternoon- early evening from November, 1968; some of you may remember an AFL game between the New York Jets and Oakland Raiders, that was such a squeaker.  After the Jets took a 3 point lead with about a minute left in the fourth quarter, NBC cut away to a scheduled movie, 'Heidi:.  The swtchboards lit up at NBC from angry football fans.  During the opening minutes of "Heidi" the Raiders scored 2 touchdowns in 9 seconds to seal a come from behind win.  NBC's switchboard basocally melted from all the heat they got.  They have never quite forgotten it.

If this game is close, you may want to rethink that strategy....

Probably.

If it keeps going at this pace we won't have to worry about it.

Grace and peace to you.

Canada just scored - 8:30 ast.   !!!!!!!

Score 1-0

Getting ready for church - I doubt if the game will be over before we start the service - I hope there is an announcement during the lunch before the annual meeting.

I just now realize how we could have handled it.  We could have planned to watch the hockey game and have brunch - followed by worship, leading into the annual meeting.  Ah, but for hindsight.

I can hear people cheering loudly from their apartment balconies now. I'm downtown and it's 6:20 a.m. I guess we won. I don't think it will get as rowdy as the Stanley Cup. You have to also remember, we hosted the Olympics, when Canada won the spectacular medal winning game. The bars were all open, the streets were crowded with thousands of people walking down them, quite exhuberant and quite possibly drunk and there was no rioting.

Not to derail the tread, but livestreaming in the sanctuary definitely has potential for building community within a congregation.

The firsr time my church did it was for Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding.

That was a weekday, so I had to go to work, but I heard lots of positive comments from the members who came. They were sitting in a church, watching a wedding in a church, and they really felt like they were part of the service (more so than if they had watched it from their living rooms.)

I really enjoy Olympic hockey because there is no fighting.....unlike NA where one goes to a fight, and a hockey game breaks out.

Great game with few penalties.  Also enjoy World Juniors.

Yeah, I wish the NHL would take the IIHF's attitude to fighting. OTOH, international hockey has long had a reputation for dirty stick work and that sort of crap (basically, violence that falls short of actual fighting) so it's not all coming up roses. Perhaps they've cracked down, though, as the NHL has been. Certainly today's game was about as clean a hockey game as I've ever seen.

You have echoed my opinions, exactly!  In fact I just posted these feelings on another website.  Why can't the NHL adopt the same rules as the Olympics?  Why not use the Olympics as our best example?

First of all, I seldom watch hockey and one reason is the fighting. I am embarrassed that it is so primitive and unsportsman like and is allowed to happen in North America.  Unfortunately, too many people do watch for exactly the opposite reason.

There was a church here that was included on the list of places to go to watch the game - the rest were bars.

Generally speaking I don't watch hockey.  I only watch each of my hockey playing grands once or twice during the season.  I am appalled by the violence in local adult games and on TV.  I just don't have any interest in encouraging it.

Olympic hockey though is mostly great to watch.  The actual game is more interesting on the bigger ice surface and there is little violence.  This year I did see footage of one player beating another with their stick when the competitor was down.  Disgraceful - the ref didn't seem to see it unfortunately.  The US mens team came across like pouty little boys in their battle for bronze.  Struck me as poor sports!

Here is another idea. Why not set up poker tables and put in slot machines in the santuary before service starts? The last place I would go to watch millionaire NHL hockey players play would be in a church. I mean that is just me to each their own. BTW I am not anti hockey I used to be a big fan of the NHL before the lock outs and the runaway player salaries. Anyway that is just my opinion. Just one more thing to add yes I know it is the Olympics and not the Stanley Cup but aren't most of the players on NHL teams? Sorry just thought how it might sound in the sanctuary praise the Lord Canada scores again. Good gravy Canada just took another penalty. Can somebody please pass me a little more of that yummy grape juice.wink

dreamerman,

that's a brainstorm, there!  any winnings could automatically be donations to various charities, maybe randomly selected with a printout that says where the money is going?

there's a congregation for everyone, even you, dreamerman

(i've always wondered how bears view church, if they're solitary or if they go in groups...and if they go in groups, how do they keep from snacking on their congregants?)
